Mounting point weakness

I've read a few times that there is a place where the downpipe mounting breaks because the stock setup can be too rigid ? i have a annoying rattle all of a sudden and wanted to know exactly which bit to look at to see if thats my my problem ?

my downpipe broke at the top flange, which is the weak point--the system is rigid and as the engine rocks and rolls, this flange takes the stress and breaks! This breakage would be accompanied by a noticably louder exhaust sound though . . .

I have an extra down pipe, do you think if I put an extra beed of weld around the top flange that would help any? Or does it not matter because it is still a weak point? Thanks

i bet it would help -- it may then be strong enough that something else becomes the weak link. . .

best thing to do is incorporate a short length of flex-pipe in your replacement exhaust system and then it won't stress the joints.

Thats the way it always works, you just move the weak point to something else
