Speedo Cable?

Postby Simon_P » Mon 27.03.2006, 18:05

Hello All,

After Changing the gearbox oil I first had an intermittent speedo, then nothing at all.

The first problem that I have is that the car is 150 miles away for the winter. Will be going to see it and put a new battery in on Friday.

I have checked that the cable doesn't turn at the speedo end.

When I changed the oil the gear was ok.

I think that I have the gear inserted properly but there is a little play.

So I suspect the cable.

Went to my local parts store to try to get the cable. The guy said that the (new) Astra has an Isuzu engine so the cable might fit. I'm willing to give it a go as it is only £15

It has the right GM head but I don't know:
1. the required length
2. the size of the thread for our gearbox

Is anyone able to measure them?

Thanks,

Simon

Simon,

The M100 Isuzu engine was never fitted to any other vechile in this country so i would doubt the Astra cable would fit the gearbox (but would be interesting to know if it does) + if u force it to fit u could damage the plastic gear drive in the gearbox.

More likely the gear cable at the gearbox end isn`t fitted correctly, try removing and refit.

I'm assuming that the engine (1.7 D) and gearbox are both different, but the connection for the speedo take-off might be the same.

GM own Isuzu so they may be using an Isuzu gearbox somewhere.

Thanks,

Simon

very possible, let us know if it fits. Be good for the cross reference section.

Agree with Monty, most likely that the geared end is not back in the gearbox properly or has become unseated. The speedo drive is secured into the gearbox oil filler by a clamping plate which in turn is held down by a bolt, or nut and stud, if these are loose or missing then all that holds the cable end into the gearbox is the sealing o ring and it will pop out (believe me I know!). When you get to the car and pull the cable from the gearbox give the geared end a spin with your fingers, if the cable is unbroken anyone sat in the drivers seat should be able to see the speedo needle jump a bit. All worth checking before buying a new cable, but if you do and the GM part fits then let us know.
