Welding

Advice required please.
I am looking at purchasing an S2 elan with new MOT.
It needed plate welding on the chassis .
I have an old baby elan and welding those chassis was a "no no".
Should I
I understood S2's were rustproofed in a superior manner ??
Any comments gratefully received .

As a general rule of thumb welding the chassis is still a no no however much depends on how well it was done and the proximity of the weld to critical components.

You'll also need to know why it required welding in the first place ie rust or accident. If rust then what confidence can you have that unseeable parts are sound and if accident then what confidence in the repair, alignment etc.

Everything may be fine but you need to probe for some detailed background.

I'm not sure if S2's were better treated than SE's certainly the Wishbones were made of aluminium so that was an improvement but what else I know not

Minor correction : S2 wishbones are galvanised steel.

Seems S2 chassis are more prone to corrosion than earlier NA/SE.

That's correct - rear wishies were galvanised steel and not aluminium

Re S2 chassis being more prone to corrosion than N/A and SE's................I remember someone telling me recently (was it you at Silverstone Jim ?) that when Bugatti had Lotus they found a load of these chassis outside rotting away and incorporated them into the limited edition run of 800

At least, that's what I seem to remember but I do also remember that a few beers were involved so I might have got a few things mixed up in the old grey matter

My local guy in the village has just done some welding in my car(new front jacking points/strengthened outriggers) without any particular problems but then again he has cut his teeth on the old Scimitar's

just a thought, but how did this S2 get through its recent MOT if the chassis needs plate welding ?
