Well, todays visit to the garage wasn't quite what I expected - but not in a bad way at all.
Ray has been my "MOT man" for the last 7 years, and we always have a fairly relaxed time, with no great surprises.
However, today he had his apprentice, Shan (it's a longer name, but spelt in Welsh, so she is known as Shan) waiting to do my car - as part of her college course she has to do a number of 'full' MOT type tests, with a written report, whilst Ray does the official testing/logging of the event.
The whole thing took nearly an hour and a half, as Shan needed to fill in a few forms with her observations of the vehicle, and the test parameters. Ray had already asked if I was okay with this, as it would take extra time, but as I had nowt else in the diary, I was happy to play along.
The car had the most thorough test/examination that it has ever been through, with a lot of things done which are not actually part of the relevant MOT test for that age of vehicle, but Ray knew that the car would be a good test example...... also, it gave Shan a chance to see how different things worked in the real world and not just in the books.
My only surprise was that the headlamp aim was perfectly within tolerance, as they have never been set up on a beam reader before, so i was half expecting to need to twiddle the screws a bit.
I spent about half an hour explaining the vagaries of the brake system as she had never encountered a car with adjustable bias valves, and didn't understand them. The chart on the wall didn't list the Elan, so brake efficiencies were calculated using formulae in the book, together with the weight as listed on the VIN plate. I explained that whilst the overall efficiency would be automatically calculated from the weight on the rollers, by adjusting the bias valves it was easy to make the car appear to have 66% efficiency, not the 50% required, but that would have far too much braking at the rear for road use. So she got to fiddle with the valves whilst I operated the brakes/rollers and she could see what effect it had on the readouts. At the end I set it up where I like it, with 64% on the front, and 36 on the rear - which gave an overall efficiency as 55%.
The handbrake gave a good 210Lbs, which is 19%, so I was happy with that - and no imbalance was found.
It's the only MOT test I've had where each tyre was checked for tread depth at 3 points in the circumference, and noted on the forms. (all over 6mm).
Oh, and the emissions were well low (as expected with a closed loop system).
So, it took a lot longer than usual, but I had time for 2 coffees instead of the usual 1 - and gave someone a good chance to actually learn things that they don't normally see in modern cars. I did have to explain where all the switches and things are, and was glad that the hazards didn't play up! (and she couldn't see the number plate lights as it is an LED strip under the boot lid).
I *think* it is a good thing that Ray selected me and my car for this extended test, because he believed it wouldn't fail!
So, 3 years since the last MOT was done, and under 400 miles on the odometer since then....... hopefully it will get a bit more use in the current year, at the expense of the blue one.
