David,
Getting one in Europe (other than from a Lotus specialist) is going to be very dependent on how hard the person looks for a suitable cross reference - I don't know if they were ever used on a European market vehicle other than the Elan. Hence why I use Rock Auto (or other US suppliers) for a lot of my purchases - they nearly all have access to the parts information (even if they can't actually get the parts) as they are used in the Isuzu Impulse and GEO Storm (both of which sold in fairly strong numbers in the USA).
The Remy unit I bought (I have actually bought 2 of them) is listed for the Impulse, but isn't 100% identical to the unit fitted to the Elan (it is slightly larger, higher capacity and has a larger diameter pulley) - however, it is a straight swap (except changing to a longer drive belt makes the adjustment bolts land in a more easily accessible location).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
