PECO fitted!!

Well - finally took the plunge and got a PECO - had it fitted today and its niiiiice

Not sure if its that much faster - but the power delivery is a loads smoother all the way up the revs - and the sound it makes is awesom

Havent seen any problem with boost creep - or weird whistling noises reported by others.

I didnt really get to give it any beans after fitting - so I took it out again last night for a spin - I am seeing a significant performance gain

Nope - only upgrades so far are a bailey dump valve and the PECO. I am in discussion with Dave about obtaining a shortshift kit

Next major upgrade will be brakes though - I wouldnt want to put any more power down without sorting them out first

I'd definately recommend it. One thing to be aware of though - it is significantly louder than the stock exhaust.

but then

I like loud.......

The sound it makes is a lot deeper and "grumbly" when idling - and sounds really sporty when accelerating hard.

I had a Peco fitted about five weeks ago at their premises in Liverpool. Really enjoyed the experience. I think this exhaust is great value for money and would highly recommend them.

Deffinatley seeing an increase in power and certainly has more of a growl to it, but a good sporty sound without sounding like a boy racer. Biggest downside I would say is that some of that growl seems to come through the back of the drivers seat as vibration and has made me feel quite sick on longer journeys. Since having the Peco fitted I am also getting a kind of misfire or engine stutter at around 60-70 or whenever the turbo kicks in. No engine warning light though. Im wondering if this is a sign of boost creep and what can be done to fix it.

Glad you're pleased with the exhaust (with a caveat or two). I don't have a Peco, but a 2-1/4" system made by the local exhaust place.

I had them put a second silencer in it (in the transverse section just forward of the wheel arch) because even my old system (2" straight-through stainless) was too noisy on long journeys, and I reckoned the 2-1/4" would be worse. It has helped a lot, but can still be wearing on long journeys (there's naff all soundproofing between you and the silencer(s)). Monty also has the additional silencer on his Peco system.

So, as a solution to the droning on long journeys, I'd suggest a second silencer and some soundproofing. Or just take the hood off for long journeys.

As to the misfire / stutter whenever the turbo kicks in, I don't think it's related to the exhaust, nor is it likely to be boost creep. If it happens when the turbo starts its job, then it could be a sign that something in the ignition system is on the way out; ie a component can cope at normal conditions, but when you chuck in the denser charge from the turbo and give it some welly, the component reaches the edge of its comfort zone and starts complaining. The first thing to check would be the plugs (especially the 31 thou gap), then work your way through timing, coil packs, plug leads etc. There are a couple of threads on the subject.

Thanks John, thats a real help. Thought maybe I was being a bit of a sissy with regards to the noise/vibration through the seat, so glad to hear others have had a similar experience.

Had my Elan in for a service at the Lotus dealership in Leeds last week and they ran diagnostics to try and sort out the misfire. First they said they were going to change the ignition leads because they were worn but then decided they were repairable. They gave me the car back with the problem suposedly fixed. Drove to Manchester the fllowing day (40miles) and the problem is just as bad as ever. Well I suppose they did their best.
My ignition leads are only two years old and th plugs have only seen about 10k but looks as though I will have to change then after all.

I was referring to exhaust noise/droning which gets wearing on a long journey at constant revs, not an actual vibration felt through the seat. I don't know how bad the problem is. If there's a vibration, check that the exhaust isn't in contact with anything. If Peco did it, it should be a proper job, with isolating rubbers/straps etc. However something might have moved to cause contact.

For the misfire, check to plug gaps first.
