Guys
I've got a problem whereby the car will start from cold no problem. You can drive normally for a mile or so then it cuts out. When it cuts out the engine management light is on and it wont strt again until you've left it for 10 mins or so then it will start and get you another mile or so before stopping again.
Any suggestions as to possible causes welcome. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a paperclip?
This might help.

Welcome,
It’ll be interesting to see the result of this extreme case considering they all start better from cold than from normal operating temperature.
Presumably, it would cut out if you left the car stood ... it has nothing to do with driving it?
Will it go up to temperature in
Service Mode without cutting out?
Have you checked the

Right. Paperclip test method reveals no fault codes. Just flashes 12. It has been sitting for several days without the battery connected. Would that clear any codes that were logged?

Sounds like a fuel issue to me...Either the fuel system is loosing pressure via a leak or a faulty fuel pump.
I am sure someone will tell you to do the wiggle test that usually sorts out anything from flat tyres to broken windscreens LOL
good luck

Thanks John
I wondered myself if the fuel pump was intermittent, but wouldn't there be a fault code logged in that case. As I say it's sat for weeks with the battery disconnected. Would that have cleared any codes that were there?

mine has done this.....
CTS (coolant temp sensor) had gone......therefore the ECU had the engine at -39deg C so was basically overfuelling....
flooding the engine.....then taking 10 mins or so to evap and start again......
I suggest you buy the esprit version if it is the CTS......
the elan version is ~£60 the esprit version ~£15.....and theyre exactly the same....

.....yes.....not have it connected to a battery will clear the fault codes.....
you'll have to repeat your fault.....

Thanks a lot guys. I'll change the temperature sensor first (got to be worth a shot at £8) and take it from there. I'll also run it again and see what (if any) fault codes reveal themselves.
You guys are great!. I'll let you know.

Hi Chaps
Finally had a chance to run the engine up today. It ran for nearly an hour before cutting out. Checked for fault codes using the paperclip method and no codes stored.
It has now stood for 4 or 5 hours but it will not start. I've checked for ignition and there is a spark, however when turning on the ignition there is no sound at all from the fuel pump. I've exposed the top of the fuel tank, and there is a three pin connector for the fuel pump and tank sender. One of the connections is earth i assume, and the other two are live feeds. One of the wires shows about 10.5 volts with the ignition on, and i suspect thats the sender connection. The other one shows next to nothing, so I suspect there is no power getting to the pump.
Any suggestions where I go from here?

You will know this already but ... the fuel pump fuse is number 3 in the main fuse box ahead of the passenger side door hinge

Just to let you lovely people know the problem is solved. It was an intermittent fuel pump relay.
Cleaned all terminals and re-fitted. Job done.
Thanks to you all for your help!!
