What about a rough price on this turbo unit?

Well, I guess that would depend on a few things. I did a guesstimate on all the parts required which would include: Turbo, downpipe, compressor inlet adaptor, compressor outlet adapter, gaskets, oil fittings and lines, water fittings and lines, studs, nuts, washers, bolts, silicone hoses for the compressor and filter and charge cooler, and new charge cooler. In other words everything except a new exhaust and engine management and came up with around $1600-$1800. Now that's as close as I could come based on guessing on some costs. Cost of the adapter, downpipe, and charge cooler depend on material and fabrication costs.

My only obstacles right now are the cost and fabrication of the downpipe and the charge cooler. I have a meeting this afternoon to discuss once and for all if the charge cooler will become a reality. What has to be done is a PO must be issued to our prototype shop from aftermarket. Aftermarket has already received a PO from an outside company. I need to get a price from the proto shop before the internal PO can be issued, then I need to send the money to the company purchasing the coolers. If the price is right and all agree then the second batch will be easy. I'm loking for 10 units to start ,but will not follow through unless the price is reasonable. If it isn't it would be easier dealing with a competitor. I've just about had it with our Thermal group! The Turbo guys will do anything for me at this point.

Russ,

Thanks for the rough price guide, i`m not up on this type of upgrade, but do we need to change the ECM or can we do what Costas has done (if i`ve understood the shark correctly) and use a fuel regulator and use MBC :?:  :?

What size injectors would be needed for this turbo model?

Hope this works out Russ. VERY interested in this if you manage to get a kit sorted :)

Posted this in Elan Products as well. Charge cooler is closer! Price and timing still need to be determined.

I now have the oil line, water lines, compressor air intake, and compressor air out pipes done. Air in and out need to be powder coated but that's for later, Working on the downpipe right now and it's coming along nicely. It will be a 3 inch oval pipe to an imediate 3 inch 90 degree down then a couple of turns. During this bending and turning it will transition down to a 2 1/2 inch pipe. To speed things up I'm not touching the intake, head, or exhaust manifolds at this time. that will be phase 2. I will post photos soon of my progress.

Today I talked with the Turbo aftermarket guys and the they will soon be offering a drop in replacement for the GT2560R which I'm using. The drop in will be the GT2860RS (Disco Potato). So if 250-280 HP isn't enough then this drop in will allow you to go to 280-320 HP. :D It will be nice because the orientation will be exactly as I have which is just like the stock unit. :D No word on the timing for this release yet, however it is being tested in the lab as we speak.

"The Green Monster"

Postby Houdini » Wed 23.11.2005, 19:42

This project needs to be changed to "The Green Monster" for 2 reasons. One is because my wife refers to it as "That Green Monster" everytime she walks through the garage, and two because she calls it a money pit. I think she means well, but then again...

Anyway here are the latest pictures with everything secured except the downpipe. I won't show that yet as it's still in a mockup stage and not nearly as bling bling as Daves. Intake pipe is still raw and I need to fabricate a bracket for it. Starting out I will have an MBC but that may change at some point. I will probably change out the blow-off valve as well.

The goal is to fire it up in about 2 weeks and get it to the muffler shop for a deserving 2 1/2 exhaust with a free flow CAT and muffler. Then back to the house for the Haltech installation, 3 bar MAP sensor, and RC injectors. I still have a goal of having it all tuned and road worthy by March, but I think I can beat that date with a couple of vacation days and dyno time.

Man after all this time the downpipe is finally done. It looks so simple but took so long. Anyway here are a few pics. I'm using a v-band connection for the connection to the exhaust. Now to go out and install it and hopefully start the engine soon.

So once the monster's fired up is it off to the dyno?
Incidently, did you retain the AC?

Once I get it running it's off to the muffler shop, then I'll install the Haltech, and then to the dyno. Yes I retained the A/C. The downpipe clears the a?c by about 3/8" (9-10 mm) and will be wrapped. Still plan on retaining the original heat shield. I did a trial fit last night and the downpipe goes on without any clearance problems with the studs installed in the turbine housing. So if/when I ever decide to change to a different turbo I simply undo the v-band, unbolt the downpipe, and then unbolt the turbo. Some of my goals were to retain the A/C, have it look mostly stock, and make turbo changing easy if it ever needs to be done.

Looks great, Russ! Boy did I have a @#$% of a time getting my pipe in. Everything now fits fine (it was designed in place), but once everything was together, it was iffy getting it *into* place. Had to remove the anti-rollbar to get enough room to go in from the bottom. Don't know what I'd have done with the A/C in there. :?

Anxious to hear how things come out!

2 Words! It's running! :D Okay more than 2 words, it's running, no leaks, and it's not exactly low profile because the the exhaust ends at the downpipe (loud). Next is get it to the exhaust shop ASAP! Because of my work schedule I don't know when that will be, but I've given myself 2 weeks tops. The exhaust shop is only 5 blocks away and they are a quality shop. They have high performance CAT's, muffflers, and do mandrel bends, so I should be in good hands. Only problem is the battery won't hold a charge so I guess that's on the list as well.

Great stuff Russ!
I'd be interested to learn what your exhaust shop comes up with, as I will need to upgrade my exhaust when I eventually get around to fitting Nitromans' non-squished downpipe that he had made for me. Is the exhaust shop in Long Beach?

Brian,

It's Long Beach Muffler on Anaheim, 1 block west of Termino. I've had him do exhausts before on my Sunbeam Tiger and '56 Chevy. It's been several years though, but I'm sure he can handle it. I'll report back with a few pictures after it's completed.

My 2 cents.

About the down pipe, I noticed that the diameter of it remains the same at all the length of it (or am I wrong?). I have installed 4 different downpipes with different orientation and design and I can positively say that the best option by far is the one that the downpipe has the shape of a cone, gratually reducing the (inner) diameter of it.

I apologize for my bad use of English words but I hope you got the meaning of what I am trying to say.

Keep up the good work!
