Replacement 'Door carpet'

Postby DavidElena » Thu 11.01.2007, 23:32

After 16 years my bits of red carpet stuck to the doors (probably seemed like a good idea in the late 80's) could do with replacement (they're a bugger to err 'hoover' with the Dyson).

I'm not necessarily looking for replacement red carpet (can you even get it?), maybe red leather to match the red stripe in the door pocket and seats (still a bit 80's?).

Any suggestions? Thanks.

well, that's a simple enough area you could:
1. get some carpet, cut it to fit and glue it on yourself
2. get some metal cut/bent/finished/stenciled to your liking and glue it in there instead
3. get an upholstry shop to make you a leather piece to fit

Thanks Doug. I've bought some red leather off EBay and will have a go at retrimming. If it looks OK I'll post a photo.

Where's the "slaps forehead in exasperation" smiley when you need it?!? It was specially designed for Benkisms wasn't it? :?

BTW DavidElena, I just got a good tip this evening - possibly slightly after the horse has bolted but you never know:

Lotus are selling off old red carpets at present for a fiver each (see this thread). Therefore a colour match is pretty much guaranteed. If you could get a large enough footwell carpet then you could use your old door trim piece as a template.

And while travelling to Bristol may before Friday may not be totally convenient, I've heard that any bits not sold will go back to Lotus and they can even arrange despatch of parts. You may want to investigate this further and report back your findings...

Thanks for the idea, from the latest threads it looks as though all the carpets were bought up, I couldn't get down to Bristol myself as I was in France. Anyway, I've bought the red leather now and it's a pretty good match for the original violent red trim on the seats and doors so I'll fit it and see how it looks.

One of the reasons the door carpet was looking a bit ragged was that the previous owner seems to have had to pull it off to access the scrivets which secure the plastic trim to the main door section. However, the female parts of the scrivets don't appear to be there anymore and I've realised that the inner door section is not secured.

Anybody had to source replacement scrivets whilst doing a door rebuild job? Any idea where I might be able to get them from? Thanks.
