Installing additional memory

I want to install some additional memory in my PC. I have existing 512MB installed of DDR SDRAM PC2100 running at 133MHz (I think). The motherboard manual says that the memory should be PC266 compliant (whatever that means). I have found some memory that is PC2100 266MHz Clock speed. Would this be all right to put in my PC? I guess that the clock speed would be reduced to 133MHz.

I could be wrong here, as it's been a while since I've had to think about it, but the DDR (double data rate) part means that the 133MHz clock speed is effectively doubled to 266MHz by transferring data on the rising and falling edges of the clock signal. i.e. DDR266 is actually running at 133MHz but gives the effective speed of 266 using the technique above.

I reckon it should be fine Chris. In fact, someone a bit more up to 'speed' on here may even tell you that you can use faster rated DDR memory as I think it'll just step down to the lowest speed. (only reason i mention this is because I've sometimes found PC2700 or PC3200 at lower prices than PC2100 due to what's most popular)

just been looking on the Crucial website and for my motherboard they recommend PC2700 and do say that it is bckward compatible. Your right as well, it is cheaper so i'll go for 1GB at £69. Thanks for your help

I always go via www.quidco.com if they have a discount arrangement with a website I'm buying from (it puts the discount into your Paypal account and has funded several Lotus purchases!). Anywhere between 2% and 10% discount.
