As a matter of interest, i was told this is the same grommit that is used around the petrol filler pipe.

I bought one of these when I first got my car as the split OE one bugged me every time I opened the bonnet. However I refused to fit it and gave it to someone on here, I forget who
Perhaps they could post pics before you all jump in. The OE is 3 times the price but IMHO is thin for a reason.

as we are all talking bout the same thing i'll add a question/problem

the pipe in my car that goes thru said rather tatty grommit, whats it supposed to be attached to, cos mine is "floating" and tends to "clunk" when i drive around/change gear etc etc

mick
now i have one, i just want to keep tinkering with it!!!!!!!
sorry mum :(

Mick,

Are you talking about the pipe that runs from the plenum to the intercooler?

Mick,

Yep. :-D

Basically, the air flow runs something like this:-

Atmospheric air (1 bar) goes through the air filter dustbin & along the corrugated hose to the Turbo.
Passing through the turbo it is pressurised to ~1.6 bar, and goes back through the lower pipe (sort of parallel to the corrugated one) and out of sight to the intercooler.

The intercooler is like a radiator / oil cooler thingy with the big hose going into it one end.

As the pressurised air goes through the radiator, it is cooled by airflow (like coolant in the normal radiator), and becomes more dense.

At the other end of the intercooler, it goes into the metal hose which comes back out through the wing (with a nice new grommet!). It then goes through the last big bore rubber (or stainless, or carbon fibre) hose (the one where you fit a ‘dump’ valve – if you have one) to the throttle body where it mixes with petrol and into the engine (simplified version!).

As such, the metal pipe should be attached to the outlet from the intercooler radiator. If it isn’t you’ll have no turbo advantage as the engine is only sucking in atmospheric air!!!!!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

soooooooooo

if my tube isnt conected to anything it might be why i dont seem to have as much power as i expect to have and also maybe why my guage only reads to 0.5ish usually

sounds like i'm gonna have to get my wheel arch liner off (after 16 years thats gonna be fun to try)

This pipe also has a bracket behind said wheel arch liner which bolts to the chassis. As for getting the liner off good luck :P and - shameless punt here- you may like to have a look at my post for new fasteners as I have a load left

There may be a slightly easier way (although I'd advocate freeing up any siezed nuts anyway - you never know when you might really need to gain access). And nice new shiny fasteners are always satisfying!

If you can completely block the lower big hose that goes from the turbo to the intercooler, and remove the top big hose the goes from the metal pipe into the throttle body, then you could pressure test it.

You would do this by trying to blow down it like a trumpet (but without the silly noise - you'll look quite silly enough blowing down your hoses as it is)! :P

Honestly, that's what I would do.
If it's all properly sealed then you'll be able to feel pressure building up.
If it's not, then you'll hear it hissing and can trace the leak.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

BCingU,
Neil ;-)

well, i think there's def something wrong, as, even after i made sure my timing was spot on, sorted out the high revs problem, i went for a couple of runs to check the performance of the car and found out my 0-60 tims are about 10 seconds and my 0-100 times about 22 seconds

i def got a problem somewhere, meant to be a sports car ffs
