More PC troubles, the RAID array is still flaky - I'm on 3 out of 4 discs right now. I think maybe the accumulation of upgrades I've put in it is overcoming the power supply. Time for a new one!

BTW I think a few people have first refusals on the 5 switchers. I'll order some more as they seem popular.

BTW the latest chip revision is seriously quick in the mid range - its pretty ferocious. I can't be absolutely sure that big bore exhausts will like it, some creepy ones may overboost.

Anyway I've just pulled another very long day at work and I can't face the PC for any longer right now so forgive me if I leave this stuff for another day. I've got some days off next week...

ESM Chips

Postby algirdas » Thu 15.02.2007, 23:44

Dear Alan:

Would you be so kind as to put me down for one of the new version chips for a Cali Federal? And does this work in lieu of, or in conjunction with, the earlier chip I received from you? Which, by the way, I have yet to install. Lazy lister AND lazy fitter.

Remember, I am a complete dolt when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

Alan, if I can ask what may be the obvious to some..........

Is there now one "chip" or several? If I've not misunderstood, you've created a new chip with some improvements. Also, you've created a system whereby one can switch between different "chip settings". Does this sound right? If so, can you anwser the following please?

1. What's the new chip do in terms of performance (or when compared to the version I installed - 4.2 perhaps? can't quite recall)

2. What settings will be selectable?

3. What's the cost and availability?

I know some of this was discussed while you were in development, so to speak. I'm just looking for final confirmaiton of the above.

Thanks as always!

ESM Chips

Postby algirdas » Fri 16.02.2007, 01:26

Dear Doug:

"Yes", I know I'm an idiot. But I was hoping to do a high altitude "before and after" Elanscan run for comparison purposes. In order to get the car ready for that, I want to change the fuel filter, plug wires, coil packs, all the fluids AND port the wastegate and put on the PECO exhaust.

But then I found CV boots that need replacing, brake upgrades, fabrication of handbrake levers for the rear calipers etc.

Once all that is done AND the mountains of snow melt, I will take her out for an Elanscan run without the chip and then a second identical run with the chip.

That is why lazybones me has not put it in yet. Mea culpa. Sometimes it just seems that there are not enough hours in the day. Church, family, girlfriends. . . What am I missing? Right! Work! Sure ties up my time pretty badly somedays. But getting out into a nice heated garage on a cold winter's night and putting some cool jazz on the stereo sure makes this world look like a better place.

Thanks for the kick in the ass (arse).

Sincerely,

Algirdas

PS Plus, I have to disassemble the car, get it repainted and put back together by May 27th. I better get moving.

I have a folder with all the e.mails and PMs in the order in which I received them, I'll prioritise based on that.

The V5 fuel enrichment remap added a little power, I'm in Scotland right now and I don't have the data to hand but from memory it gave around 10bhp (if JohnW is around he can correct me). Most of the noticeable benefit comes the ongoing tinkering with boost control. Its improved a lot from the common V4.2 and even from the V4.3. I now get very rapid boost delivery combined with tight control at the target boost. The days when the chip's control wasn't quick enough to deliver >0.4bar under WOT in first and second are gone (it might not hit 0.9bar but it gives some extra). It gives a more immediate MBC type feel. It could be even faster but I have to be conservative with settings so the big exhausts (bloody things) won't fuel cut with it.

The switchable PROM thing still has one chip, its just 16x the memory size of the original EPROM found on the MEMCAL so you can have 16 different versions on one unit and switch between them. The programs could be:

0) Low boost - for the untrusted: garages etc
1) Stock
2) Stock V2 - modified boost control only
3) Kili V4.4
4) Everest V4.4
5) Kili V5.2
6) Everest V5.2

If for a UK SE then these could be on for both 9929 and 9930 (which would bring the program count to 14). I also have a crazy power mad design I might put on too (basically it boosts beyond 0.9bar in the mid range, where the fuel delivery system can keep up with the fuel requirements, and brings it back down at high revs where it can't). I've tried it my car and its good for a laugh.

Alan,
I seem to have gone about this totally the wrong way by just posting on the thread

In order to get 'on the list' do you need a seperate e-mail (or pm), or is the open expression of interest/desire sufficient?????

Thanks for the details Alan. One other question if I might. I know I asked you something like this last year and you weren't entirely sure what to do about it at the time.

What do I do if I only want to upgrade to the latest version of the chip?

I don't want to open a can of worms for you but I'd be interested in the new chip and, if I must, I'll pay you full price for it. With all the work you've done you deserve it. But, if you can work out an upgrade plan that makes sense and is easy for you that would be wonderful.

I don't know what hard costs are involved in producing them; the chip is certainly one cost. Perhaps you would consider charging full price for any new, upgraded chips but offer a "rebate" of sorts when the purchaser returns the old chip to you in good condition? Shipping charges may not make it worth while of course but that's not your problem really.

Whatever works for you is fine by me including having to pay for the new chip outright. I don't want to create more work or headaches for you.

Thanks!

:agree: Shelling out for each new release is putting me off, I was going to give it another year before "upgrading", if there were an upgrade price then it would make it a lot easier to live with.

I realise that going from the existing chips to the 16x chips might not work out the same (due to cost difference), but at, say, £50 + returned chip I would more than likely be willing to change it every year, so in reality, you're up the cost of the chip.
