Nice new Avatar :-D also the new soft top - nice and tight.

I don't know other people with the guts to diy the hood, and really can finish it in one afternoon. Kudo from me :smt023

Hardtop in the USA

Postby algirdas » Wed 14.03.2007, 21:57

Dear Marie:

Under $500 for a top is a real good price. Especially if it also represents an increase in quality over the original.

Looking good-both the avatar and the top.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

I think you are referring to the TOP then!! :smt044

cause I think Marie herself has implicated herself enough that it should not be referring to HER

I have had a life adventure the past year or so and have consequently not followed up with my fiberglass guy at all. I still think about it a lot and hope to do it someday, but just haven't had the time. We've been dealing with my wife's cancer and a plethora of other health problems for us and all our relatives. I feel like I've lived at hospitals and funeral homes the past 18 months.

When it rains, it pours. (pun intended, seeing that this is a hardtop thread)

I will certainly let the forum know once some kind of progress is made. Thank you for the follow up.

I have just bought an Elan SE and was at work today thinking about how good a hard top would be so came home and done a search.
I work for a carbon composites company but we can also manufacture things from fibre glass (pre-preg woven) and twintex which is a deformable plastic used in bumpers.
I would be interested in having a look at the moulds that already exist if they are still available to see if it would be possible to carry the project forward.
No promises but was considering making a hard top for myself and it would make things a lot easier if some of the work had already been done.

DAF,

Welcome to LEC. As you're in Northants, you probably want to check out this thread. Kuching has already produced hard tops in the UK and plans to do so again. That said, he may be interested to hear from you, as may SurferPhil who is doing a new rear panel and B post caps.

Thanks for the info. and the links Geoff.
It looks like there are already a few members also in the same industry so I don't want to rock the boat. The hard top is out of my budget at the moment but I will be having a go at odd bits and pieces to replace broken or missing parts on my car.
Are there any pictures of the hard top available anywhere?

Hi, I ordered a replacement from topsonline.com - but it is not the same as the one you have pictured. The one I received matches the original design - complete with the short gutters.

Prior to seeing the photos I wouldn't have cared, but seeing this better design had me a bit dissapointed. I contacted topsonline.com to see if there had been any changes, I even got an Email so I could forward these photos - but the lady I spoke with told me that they most likely didn't come from them???

She did however tell me their supplier is in North Carolina, so now I don't know what is up. You mentioned that this top was actually ordered directly from Kee - is it the same as the first top you received from topsonline.com?

Is it possible that topsonline only offers the original sytle, but Kee offers an alternative?

FWIW, topsonline.com seems great to deal with, prices were good, shipping was quick - its just kind of a bummer not to get the better design.
