Yes, why do you ask (says he sitting on his arse with a blank expression  ) or do I have to read earlier posts?

I wondered if you thought the small upgrade board might fit straight into the memcal.

Was that to me or NiceArse?

There's no answer to that

Sorry, the penny has just dropped! :bonk: My brain is not in gear at present.

Yes, I have a turned pin (i.e. low profile) socket in the memcal. It does sit quite low in the memcal from what I remember, so I suspect that the granddaughter board may foul the sides. There is only one way to confirm it though, so I'll put it on my list of things to do at Donington. I assume you'll have some boards with you.

Even if it does fit, you'd need to remove the stock PROM (my supersh*t chip was soldered in, I don't know about the stock PROM) and solder in a socket. This process obviously carries some risk.

I reckon it would be better if the people who don't already have one of the old boards get a single board with everything built in rather than two connected together. I know this one doesn't need lumps cut out of the case! I've got a few on the way.

I've also got some ideas about connecting the upgrade board remotely so that it won't require any case modification either but I'm still working on that one.

Come on guys, I've had one response on this.

Dear Alan:

I have the chip that you had out last year at this time. I will be in the garage this weekend and will take a closer look and post again. My apologies for the tardy response.

Sincerely,

Oh sorry - missed the prompt!
Having said that I'm not sure if I've made it onto the list yet anyway!!!

This isn't much of an answer but here goes:
This will be my 3rd Donington, and you fitted the chip into my ECU there the year before last. But more than that I can't tell you.
Unless it gives the details in an old Elanscan log.
All I can see is the PROM ID 9929 though.
Does that help? :?

My PC is down again, same thing as before with added disc corruption. I've got a new controller and 4 new drives and I'm doing a clean OS install onto the new gear. The problem is the OS (XP) gives a BSOD any time I have both RAID controllers installed at the same time which will make copying data over a challenge!

Hi Alan,
I'm sorry to hear that you couldnt make it to Donny, and that you feel better very soon.

I would like to buy a v4 9929 Everest chip for a standard UK 1991 SE.

Is this note ok, or would you prefer that I place the order via your chips website? Please advise.

Many thanks, Paul

Sorry I didn't make Donington, I was very off-colour at the weekend. I'm just about ok now.

Here is a modified waiting list. I've added the 'native' switcher board to my site now. I've appended which type I think you might want (based on my faulty memory of whether you have a standard upgrade already).

I have 8 native switcher boards (£180), 3 upgrade switcher boards (£100) & 10 standard boards (£100) at the moment. So if the list below is correct then there are enough for everyone.

please correct the list below if its wrong or confirm your entry if its correct.

V5

1. NickB - native switcher
2. Dapinky - native switcher
3. Algirdas - native switcher
4. JABrown39 - native switcher
5. DavidJT - upgrade switcher
6. Paul.P - upgrade switcher
7. sheprob - native switcher
8. Enright13 - upgrade switcher - yes I can do S2 (1499) programs
9. Dave - native switcher

If you want a V4 could you order through the website please? I've added a 'bank transfer' option. If that's selected I get in touch by e.mail after the order to arrange payment.

Confirm upgrade switcher with custom chip (half open loop, half closed).
Only problem is, the site says out of stock. Please PM me with PayPal address.

ESM Chips

Postby algirdas » Fri 23.03.2007, 20:16

Dear Alan:

I'm okay with the "native switcher" and everything. I too am not chomping at the bit and if someone needs mine urgently, by all means let them take it. Just remember that I have a California Fed Elan.

My previous upgrade chip will be securely packaged and in the mail to you (via Dave Hall) this weekend.

Thank you again for all of your hard work.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

My V5 Upgrade Switcher arrived this morning, and despite the fact that I'm at work, it's installed already - don't tell the boss!

I modified my ECU casing and cut the extra lug off the plastic casing of the switcher unit in work's Dev Lab at lunchtime, routed all the wiring and test-fired it up. I've only tried a couple of programs at idle, but it seems to run fine.

I was particularly proud of my solution for ECU casing modification - the larger part of the casing hardly needed "notching" like Monty's at all, but I gave it a bit of filing just to allow some clearance for safety.
As for the removable end-cover, I cut two slots just larger than the width of the new chip all the way back from the ribbon connector egde across the complete face of that surface. This left a flap which I then unfolded and re-bent to form a protective shield, which stands about 10mm clear of the new chip.

That probably makes no sense at all - the frustrating bit was that I took pics of all of the above to post here, but then the memory card in my phone fouled up and destroyed them! :? I'll have to take some more later.

I've tried "hot switching" from position 0 up to position 3, but as recommended by Alan, I won't go from 7 to 8 or from 15 to 0 while the system is live. This is because I've got a custom chip which has both open and closed loop control on it (I've put the O2 sensor from Sy's S2 engine in the pre-cat for improved emission control).

I'll try to get it hooked up to Elanscan on a friend's laptop this evening. I'll also put my CO meter on there and try a bit of switching to see how it affects emissions.

It's a really neat installation though, and even if I end up not being able to notice a massive amount of difference (or only ever use a couple of the available programs), it looks dead cool!!! 8)

Thanks Alan. :-D

At long last I've got through my first fill-up with the new V5 Upgrade Switcher Module/Chip installed, and I'm astonished at the results:

Previously I struggled to get 20mpg out of my Elan no matter how I drove it, or what I did to try to fix it. Honestly, I'd spoken to many people (including Alan) at length, and tried everything we could think of, short of ripping out the entire fuel-injection system and replacing it.
Every garage said that the emissions were fine, it went OK, and that I should shut up whinging and just keep putting the petrol in.
But they didn't have any other Everest equipped Elans to compare it to.

After fitting an S2 Oxygen Sensor and the V5, on the first tankful I got an average of 26mpg - 6mpg better with no other modifications and plenty of "whahooo" moments!
Not only that but I'm sure that power is up too as now the air/fuel ratio is ALWAYS optimum so you get the biggest possible bang per charge. 8)
I haven't even tried a long run yet and I'm pretty sure that at motorway speeds I'll get into the 30's - finally.

Even if this planned upgrade had all gone completely wrong and the combination of V5/CO potentiometer and O2 sensor had conflicted with one another, I would still have had a bank of 8 "old style" programs to fall back on.

But instead I've got 8 x open-loop making use of the CO pot (should Tesco ever start selling crappy fuel again! ),
and 8 x closed-loop - as if it were an S2 but without the catalytic converter to strangle the power.
Truly the best of both worlds.

I could hardly be happier, and would recommend this upgrade to anyone, especially those with an SE like mine.

Thanks Alan! :D
