Help. Some clumsy oaf has broken his "grab handle"

Postby s5tuart » Tue 03.04.2007, 10:40

Oh no!!
On refitting my soft top for the summer I have broken the plastic part that runs right across the front inside of the hood; the bit you use to pull the roof towards the windscreen.
Paul Matty only do the WHOLE assembly including the metal parts at £147 plus the dreaded VAT!
Has anyone got a spare plastic bit that I can buy please? Pretty please with sugar on! :(

Boring fact of the day........

This is a problem is usually unique to the S2 version of the Elan.

Lotus changed suppliers for the plastic insert and the replacement were thinner construction that the original. Most S2's I've seen have this problem at some stage as the plastic ages and goes brittle.

Don't knock it Will - that's very useful if the SE handle fits the S2. :poke:

The screws on mine have pulled through and I has going to repair it. If an SE one fits however, then I might be interested if there is another one going.

You're spot on Will. Brittle isn't the word for it.
What's more I didn't realise how thin the material is considering the effort that is involved in closing the roof in a hurry.

Keep it going Will/Geoff - I can see the price going up

Seriously though I will check tonight - with 2 SE's and a spare SE roof it looks like an S2 owner may be in luck.

:?
How do you close your roof?
I usually lift the roof stowage cover and rest it against my left shoulder.
Then I lift the roof out and out of the way of the stowage cover, and rest the stowage cover in place (I never lock it down when the roof is resting on it - it can't go anywhere and it makes putting the roof down next time quicker).
After that I gently lower the back part of the roof down onto the stowage cover, and then locate the front edge into it's channel.
Only at this point do I get in the car, and all I need to do is pull the clips down and push them up again to lock the front edge in place.
None of this requires pulling down on the front plastic part at all.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

Same as you Neil but I think the problem comes from being in a hurry

Well that could actually be true ?, to make up for the less horsepower they produce !, anyway GH, speeds you drive, you only need about 50bhp .
