Tell you what johnny, I don't want to offend you but.......
They weren't the ugliest wheels I saw at Donington on an Elan, but they were pretty close to being 8)
Anyway, jimbob has purchased a quality set of wheels already.

From me

edit- sorry jimbob/admin, seems i've taken top spot on jamie's thread with that garbage. Could you remove it if you find the time

Good grief that is one amazing respray, the attention to detail is inspiring.

Keep it up, and let us all see how you get on!

the only downside I see is that such a fantastic paintjob will more quickly show deterioration on the black (as opposed to other colours) and thus require more frequent attention to detail -- but then I guess you know your stufff so well this is obvious to you and you considered it before the respray

PS still waiting for the smoke stripes to appear -- where's Geoff to tease/appease me?

I decided to keep it black (after a lot of thought + input from you guys) since it was a fairly rare colour

Strip, strip, strip

Feels like thats all Im doing, nothing constructive. I keep thinking, at what point am I going to get lost. There has to be a point when things start going back together, sadly that seems to be nowhere in sight.

The plan is to get the chassis rolling and fit new brake pipes, the ones that run along the chassis. But first I have to remove all the suspension off the old car and recondition / replace it as I go. Im trying to get together all the parts that will be galvanised so I can have them done at the same time.

Removing the back suspension was fun, the cam-bolts were seized. I managed to salvage one but if I cant get one for the other side looks like I'll be making the other!

Bits off to get blasted and galvanized today should get them back 7-10 days time, just typical Im on night shift and its a 70 mile drive to the galvainzers. :|

Just in case anyones interested, rear wishbone bushes had to burnt out and metal parts had to be cut in order to remove remainder. :smt013

Prices of all 12 bushes (inner bushes come in halves) aint cheap, but certainly better than forking out funny money for 2 genuine wishbones.

Front frame / x-member has some surface rust but a good blast will get rid of that, I hope when it gets dipped in the galv bath the heat doesn't distort it too much, had to remove the small M5 studs that hold on the fans and just bored a hole to accept a M6 bolt (stainless), the M5 studs wouldn't have stood up to running a die down them to remove excess galv coating. As it is I've a few M6 and M8 threads that I will have to re cut - fingers crossed!

Once the wishbones are galvanized they should be good for a few years, just glad I cought them in time! :smt117

Jamie, it may be worth your while having the fan surrounds dipped also.
There are three rivets on each fan that need drilling out. I replaced the rivets with stainless bolts/nuts.
The surrounds are well known for rusting.

Hi Paul the fan surrounds although dirty are in mint condition so I'd rather leave original, car won't be seeing any more winters anyway 8)

I just found this thread!!!!!!

I am amazed JUF's lives on!!!!

This used to be my CONCOURSE winning SE.

If you want more info on its history PM me.
I have photos with the Trophy's on the bonnet quite simply worth ALL THE EFFORT. I tried to buy her back 3 times.

I am soo pleased your putting her right. Dont ditch the original interior they are getting so rare with perforated leather on an SE. If you do decide to re trim I have another interior you could send off to have re trimmed and I would be interesyted in JUF,s interior

What a remarkable car!!!!!

All the Best

Regards Mike

PS I have the sun visors and original 15 inch wheels in my shed if your into originality I fitted the S2 wheels to keep them pristine. The wheels have the original spec MXX2 Michelins on them.

Hi Jimbob,

I think you should replace the top feed pipe to the PAS pump. If you remove the rubber covering it near the pump you will find a slight kink. Back in 1999 these pipes were unavailable from Lotus and second hand parts were very rare so I just covered the kink up for show purpose. It does not effect the steering pump operation.

I have a cam bolt you can have if you like for the purpose of restoring JUF's.

The guy who I sold it too lives near me still, he was the guy who hit the block in the road which slewed the car into a stone bridge. I supplied the A4 folder with SH to the guy who did the extremely botched repair, however you may be able to get the owners hand book with early service stamps of Steve's insurance company I will have a word with him if you like.

If you can get down the B post on the drivers side you will find some hood pivot bolts which I lost down there on a very memorable journey to Brands Hatch (not to track the Elan I may add)

Bloomin hell Mike  This is excellent

You will have pm in the next ten mins!

I did speak to Steve just after I bought the car he was very helpful and did mention you but I lost his tel. no. and couldn't follow things up.

I knew there was some concourse history but thats all I know.

A4 folder was passed on to me and its now starting to bulge and Im going to have to start volume 2.

Im afraid JUF's interior is too good to let go or even get retrimmed sorry. :smt102 The only change Im making to it is red carpets which should complement the grey perforated trim and black body quite nicely, if it doesn't I can always put the grey back in!

So was it you who bought the tyres from the bloke in Aberdeen?

I probably couldn't afford your wheels + tyres for another 10 years but the extra inch of the fed spec alloys really sets the car off and they cleaned up like new, mind you they aren't that old. They would be great for shows though(once I win the lottery).

You are right about the repairs to the car that were carried out, they nearly brought tears of disbelief to my eyes.

Ive been very lucky so far with some of the parts Ive managed to obtain from you guys (you know who u are!) With out you there is no way this car would ever be getting put back to original, just simply couldn't afford to buy eveything off of lotus, and when I do it hurts. But the surplus stock sale has been a great help as has Dico Lotus Ltd for those big parts. And a special thanks to Mastercard, at least until you catch up with me. :smt089

With regards to pics etc you have pm Mike

Front suspension and engine out this weekend, beautiful weather outside and Im stuck in the garage. :(

N/S/F/ suspension no bother to come off as some of it was replaced last year, prongeron still got lotus stickers on it but that will have to go grey - another visit to the spray booth. O/S suspension a bit crusty but salvagable.

Ive got new front struts to replace existing ones, just as well because the N/S one is bent!

Engine out a fun job not much room behind engine to swing a cat never mind a ratchet. I'll take my hat off to the guys who have done this with the front end built up, its bad enough with everything stripped off. Time I invested in a two post lift!
