My engine has been running very sweetly since I bought the car 9 months ago - but last weekend it started to misfire and the 'engine tell tale' light came on - the plugs are sooty as well.
How do I test to see what the fault code is ? - people on the site talk about elanscan to find out what the code - how do you do this? or do you have to take it to paul matty?
Also if anyone in or around Bromsgrove wants to look at my car and can provide any advice /suggestions then pls contact me. [I'm new to the site and not a mechanic]
Thanx for any suggestions.

You'll need to swing the glove box down out the way then pull the ALDL plug from its holder then follow the precedure given in the "paper clip test". If you need any more help, then post the results up here. There is at least one member in the Bromsgrove area.

Fetch it round to my gaff (same side of the road as Nick Whales), North towards M5 jct 4, right fork at top of hill. 300 metres up there on the right (post code is B61 0HT, if that helps).
I'll run ElanScan on it for you and we can report back here with code(s) etc. I'm at home all day today and tomorrow (at least), you won't be interrupting anything. You'll have to plug it in (under my directions) 'cos I'm practically off my feet with a degenerative back problem and the passenger's footwell is the last place I want to work in! But, Elan's and their owners are always welcome.
I'd guess yours is one of three Elans I keep seeing about, Pacific Blue SE, Norfolk Mustard S2 or a Black Elan that lives next to St John's Surgery in town.
