This all depends how good a job you want G ?, some people have £800 / 1K jobs & are happy with them, but a concourse job will cost you upwards of 2K, & to all you lot thats gonna come on here & say thats rubbish, you just don't know what your on about.

when I got quotes for my 'old' elans they ranged from £500 to £5000....
in the end I went with the £1000 version......
my reasons being that noone could guarantee how long it would last...
I spoke with mile wilkins at fibreglass services and he quoted me £5000 but then in the same breath told me that he'd done some of these and that they'd turned to 'peel' after a couple of years......
so working on the guide line that £1000 would last for say 5 years in reasonable nick then with £5000 I'd got enough for 25 years.....
I suppose you pay your money and take your choice.....
cheers

I know what your saying G. Generally you pay the extra for better preperation, removal of trim instead of masking, no overspray etc. Perhaps we should all book in with Jimbob ?

I had one of those £5000 quotes in 1990 for a Plus 2 - it makes you wonder who ever took them up on the offer - a bit like a £10,000 quote today.

£5k for a sprayjob sounds like a strip down/colour change to me, be wise to sprayshops not being sure about GRP or seeing a sports car and rubbing their hands, that may over price the job.
Some people cheap, some not, but most of your quality will come from the integrity and skill of the sprayer. Price gaurantes nothing. The labour of a simple cosmetic respray should be about £800+ the rest is the sprayshop and paint cost.
I spoke to a guy running a repair shop in a back street near me and he'd charge about £2k, my mate will half that and he runs a big garage with an oven, working for the big insurance companies.

Don't pay £2k for cosmetic and be wary of less than £700. If it's chipped then it may just be a few panels he sprays and blends, probably front end with little stripping of parts; which sounds about right for £500. (Paint isn't cheap) Make sure it's not waterbased. Go for 2pak and a decent garage setup.
Maybe tell them you are in no rush and can bring it in when they are quiet!?
But ask what they are going to do to the car (their procedure) step by step, which panels etc.

Cheers,

Phil

Thats good sound advice Phil, although our cars wouldn't really want to go in the oven  , or it would want to be extremely low .
I believe as from 2010, all paint will be water based, & a lot of the big garages have already changed over.

Had mine completely resprayed a year ago with a local outfit, recommeded to me by a mechanic friend.

Cost was £1200 which I felt was very good and had been expecting to pay £1600 - £2000. This was for a red with gold mettalic flek, which I would anticipate costing more in it's own right.

I would class the job as good, but not excellent. Mostly due to the care and attention taken to the reassebly of the panels after completion. All easily removable panels (boot, bonnet, hood stowage, doors, rear bumper) were removed to do the job. The body was prepped and the shop knowledgable about the procedures required for fibreglass.

Due to panel adjustment, I have a couple of wear marks on the a-panels and panel behind the hood stowage lid and, due to the flooding of paint required, a slight flaking off on one seam of the front bumper.

There was no overspray evident except from the stainless exhaust. Prats masked everything off apart from that

Hope that helps.

Still torn as to whether to go down the two tone red and cream with gold in the future though.
