AB Cables Tuning

Postby dans » Tue 22.05.2007, 07:49

Hi all,

Finally got my AB Shifter cables fitted last night (thanks WillB for delivery!).

After 1 attempt on Friday they ended up twisted I think, so redid the whole job and got them in nicely last night. Top tip whoever suggested using the hole on top of the cam cover for the bonnet brace!!

I think that the shift is better, though I am not sure yet that it has 100% cured the problems I was having.

My question is about tuning the cable on the nut adjusters in the AB cables. It still feels a bit stiff into second and fourth so I assumed that it might change with the adjuster. So I have moved the adjuster to both extremes on the fore aft cable but it didn't seem to change anything at all. Is this normal?
Anyone got any experience or tips?

Thanks a lot.

Dan

PS. My initial problems were a graunchy change into first and third, that I had put down to a dodgy cable, hence replacing them.

PPS. Did anyone else get instructions with their cables? I didn't :?

no, instructions with mine.

They can be stiff at first - mine eased off after a while.
As you say routing them correctly does the trick...can be fiddley though.

I set the adjusters about half way and it seemed ok at that, I did very little fine tuning.

Keep on fiddling, it should get better, mine shifts much more positively than with the old cables.

I lubricated either end of the cables as well.

Dans,
I've no instructions either. I've tried various adjustment positions on the cables in an attempt to make the change as smooth as possible, but have not yet figured out exactly what I'm trying to do.

As far as I can see, the only thing adjusting the gearbox end of the cable does is move the gearlever to a different position. It's like a datum shift of the gate.

However different positions of the adjusters do give a difference in feel to the change. I just haven't figured out the secret yet.

Keep fiddling.

Thanks for the replies. Will keep fiddling and see what I can do. They have loosened off a lot already.

Still got issue though:

gearchange

Postby gtm100 » Fri 25.05.2007, 08:14

Dans,
I have fitted the AB cables (after a struggle). The adjuster merely changes the position of the lever inside the cabin. The quality of the change is partly due to the cables and partly the gearbox itself. Before fitting, I applied lots of CopperSlip to the cables and they have quickly eased off. The sharp bend at the engine end is a problem for the cables and should be made as gentle as you can in the space available.
My problem probably originated in the gearbox, or the selector on top, with difficulty in finding 4th gear and that has not changed. You may need a gearbox overhaul but I am still looking for info to decide what to do about mine. Graunching indicates worn synchro or clutch not clearing properly.

Thanks George. Interesting comments.

Let me know how you get on! Good luck!

Dan

Ps. So I didn't make up the word "graunch" then!??!?
