I've trawled through previous threads looking for an answer to this but I can't find anything relevant. My elan has two smallish areas where the top coat/lacquer has peeled off, one on the rear wing and one on the panel between the boot and the hood storage panel. I've been to two local bodyshops, one says that he can rub down the panels to remove any loose parts of the clear coat and then relacquer it and the other shop has said that he would be better to remove all the top coat and then respray the affected panels followed by a new top coat. He recommended this because if you simply relacquered the panels then you would see where the paintwork had been rubbed down etc. To be honest their isn't too much difference in the price I just wasn't sure what was the right way to do it.

I reckon Jimbob would be the best person to answer that, but if it was me then I'd probably go with the second one if the price isn't that much different (depending on their workmanship and reputation that is).
It sounds like with one there could be a difference across the panel. But with the other you have to wonder if there is going to be a difference BETWEEN panels.
Just a consideration I guess...

Thanks, I will drop him a pm. The first quote was £200 and the second one was £300 so not much in it really.

Hi there, second guy is correct, If you were to just laquer affected areas after rubbing down flakey laquer only you would still indeed see marks through the new laquer. Correct course of action would be to rub down until you get to the basecoat (colour) at the very least, provided your guy can get the laquer edge to feather out, and then prime just beyond the affected area and then on with colour and then laquer the whole panel!
The chap who says he can cure this problem with laquer alone is best avoided, as the indians were probably just round the corner.
Where about in scotland are you?

Thanks for the info, I will get it booked into the second guy on return from my 2 weeks holiday. I'm in Dumbarton.
