I thought that 0.8bar was fine at 3.6k - I reasoned if you want to drive fast on a turbo use the revs, the power is all at the top end anyway, so why set the 3.6k boost to the maximum possible? I just put the target high enough for that extra overtaking surge. I also thought it would guard against overboost in big bore exhaust cars.

However, people moaned about it so I shoved it up.

BTW the Elysium variant has a 0.87bar target at 3.6k even at V4.4 and V5.2

and what is the variant with more boost on the mid range?
I need less turbo lag possible and the car more powerful on the mid ranges as I can't use all the revs in open streets.
my car has a k&N filter in the original bin and a sport muffler (not yet)

Yes, but as I understand it, the Elysium chip is only available if you purchase the switcher system. So, you'll need to buy the deluxe model or settle for the Everest chip. Which, with the 4.4 (and upcoming 4.5 version), gives some good punch in the midrange.

Curious to understand the difference between the Elysium 4.4 and 5.2 versions mentioned. I take it that the Elysium has a 5.2 version whereas the other chips do not? If so, what's the difference between the 4.4 and 5.2 versions???

1. V5 run leaner mixtures
2. V5 are only available on switchers

Check out Alan's FAQ's:

Q5: Why not do the V5 or Elysium on a single program chip?

A5: The chips gain power by trimming margins. The boost of the everest is on the limit of the fuel delivery system's capability at high revs (the Elysium is at the limit across much of the rev range), the safety boost limit is pushed up and above all, with the V5, the mixture at high boost is optimised for power not engine protection. All this is fine is everything is working well, however, if an injector is sticky or the fuel pressure gets low or the timing goes out or there's a CAS problem then the consequences are that much more likely to be serious without the extra fuel to keep the mixture from running lean and to cool the intake charge. If the engine isn't running well its easy to run a richer map with a switcher. If a one program chip is installed then the only way is to uninstall the chip which, while not complicated, does require the removal of the ECU. If someone installs a V5 in a car with an FCD present then it would almost certainly damage the engine. Frankly I have reservations about selling it to people of unknown technical competence at all...

Thanks Geoff. I did read the FAQ's but didn't catch the relationship between V5, Elysium and the switcher. Makes sense now though.

Just had a thought regarding the switcher for Alan toi consider in his mk II switcher product. I think it'd be kinda cool to have the switcher with two knobs and displays. One to display the chip you've dialed in (E = Elysium, V = Everest, S = Stock, etc.) and the second to show the chip version (4,5 or 0 for stock). :-D

What can I say? Buttons and switches and blinking lights turn my crank

Oh yea...............need a "valet" mode for the switcher too

On a different note...............

Alan, would you say that switching from an Everest 4.2 to a 4.4 would have a negative, positive or neutral impact on fuel economy? Just curious as I'm about to burn through my first tank of gas with the TAG installed but I also installed the 4.4 chip at the same time. Would help if I knew what the impact of the 4.4 chip was. One might surmise that fuel economy would decrease slightly given there's more boost available at the mide range. That is unless you never give the turbo a good workout

Fuel economy is entirely dependent on how you drive. The chips deliver boost in proportion to throttle angle and so any 0.9bar chip can give very good (if you don't actually use the available boost) or very bad (if you use it all the time). I think V4.2 has a higher boost target at 3600rpm than V4.4 so fuel economy may be slightly worse when at full throttle at around that engine speed but in practice I doubt you would notice any difference in economy.

My experience on all turbo & supercharged cars has been that opening the exhaust improved mileage (2-3 MPG for the Elan) and increasing the boost decreased it (back to stock for the Elan).

Alan, I thought the 4.4 chip changed the boost to be higher at 3600 over the 4.2 chip. Is that not so? Seems to be in my car now that the 4.4 is installed. What you've said is that its the 4.2 that has a higher boost target than the 4.4. Did we go backwards??? Please confirm. Thanks.

Yes it did! The V4.2 had a completely different method of boost control compared to subsequent version. When I introduced the new control method into production stuff I started off slightly conservatively with the 3.6k target to avoid potential overboost issues with big exhausts in the mid range. In the event there were no issues so I put it up again.

Hi Ratman, the V4.4 was replaced by the V4.5 so that's what you'll get. The difference is described on the previous page of this thread.

Hmm. In software companies I've worked for there is an annual support fee! You know business is bad when you make more money off that than from new sales. :?

Yea, but those recurring revenue streams are often the lifeblood of a company. Funds all that ongoing R&D for new features. Actually, I'll bet a significant portion of SAP's revenues are derived from annual support contracts.

Alan? :-D
