Rear Window cleaning

Postby Peasles » Mon 07.08.2006, 17:49

Doea anyone know what you can use to clean the rear window other than just water and bubbles? I don't want to scratch it (worse than it is) and it is getting nigh on impossible to see out of.

Thanks

Do a search for 'mothers'. Its in a red bottle and retails around £15 with p+p in the UK.
It came top in a test by some car mag a while back. Wont perform miracles but certainly removes scratches etc.

Pour a few drops of pure Andy on a very soft cloth and 'rub' the plastic screen easy in circular movements untill it is dry again.
I've used this over many years to clean without damage and with great result.

Before doing this, make sure the window is clean by using a lot of handwarm water in combination with a very soft sloth, i.e. that there is no sand or other scrathing stuff on it anymore.

Autoglym super resin polish.

Clean with water.

Then polish very gently.

I suppose that other bodywork polishes would work as well.

Andy is a Dutch 'allesreiniger' by Unilever.
In other parts of the world it's also known as CIF multi purpose liquid gel

And is it only me who thinks that somebody should tell Unilever that Cif sounds like something you should go to the clinic for?

Cheers. I am off to Sainsbury's, to find Andy.

My wife had a friend who when she was pregnant, had massive cravings for JIF, just touching it and smelling it...(weird)

Marathon was better (thats the price of globalisation). Monster Munch and Wagon wheels used to be bigger right...!?

I can't speak for Dico, but I don't think so. That's a Mothers vinyl protectant, similar to ArmourAll Protectant. As an alternative, both my brother and I have had good luck over the years using the plastic restorationi products from Meguiars. Not only on the rear window but also on rear lamp, turn signal and marker lenses. Here's a link to the products (URL embedding is not working for me today...)

The Meguiars stuff is excellent. Tigerdog's referenced the professional products, which I haven't used, but I've used the PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish in their Enthusiast range, which is really good. There's a stockist locator on their website. Most Halfords stores carry some of their product range, but you might need to go to one of their "Master Stockists" for this item, or order online.

I'd thoroughly recommend all the Meguiars products. I spent many hours over the winter using their claybar, paint cleaners, restorers, polishes and waxes to spruce up my car after year's of neglect. It now looks amazing and prompted "how did you do that" questions from other owners at Goodwood last month. My insurance agreed value also went up £1000!
