M100 S2 Elan Jim Clark Special Editon

Hi everyone.

I've just bought my second S2 Elan and after having it serviced my garage informs me that they think it might be one of the "Jim Clark Special Editions". It has a red leather stearing wheel and red inserts on the door panels. The garage says that it would also have had yellow alloys as well.

Does anyone have any information about this special edition and/or pictures of what the car would have looked like at launch?

I don't believe that it was a commemoration of JC more a celebration of F1 success as a whole. But they're lovely looking cars and very rare.

Do I take it you have two S2's? If you do, then gazza would be very interested to hear from you, as he is painstakingly compiling a register of the 800 or so S2's. Check out this thread for more information.

Just checked the Register and it seems I have 8 of these special edition S2's with only 2 recorded with yellow wheels.

What convinced me to buy my Elan four years ago was seeing a dark blue (midnight blue maybe?) S2, with yellow wheels for sale in a mag. I think it was possibly Classic and sportscar.
It was £14000 back then and out of my reach.
Looked beautiful, maybe it was yours even

If it was one of the eleven, they were all Metallic Racing Green.

My one is metalic racing green. It does not have yellow alloys (and to be honest I am not 100% convinced that they look that good - but as I look at them more and more, I think I may be changing my mind). When I picked up the car a couple fo weeks ago, I just thought I was lucky ennough to get another fairly good S2 (I have just written one off but that is another very sad story).

When I collected the new S2 from the Lotus Garage it was only then that they tipped me off that it might have been something a bit special. This was because of the red door trims and the red steering wheel. It may be that my garage has got it wrong and that I just have a standard S2 that came with the red trim as an optional extra. At the moment my car has the standard 5 spoke alloys (not yellow)

Anybody got any ideas on the red detailing?

Geoff - As you may have guessed, I only have the green S2. I wrote off a red S2 about a month ago.

I am more than happy to provide you with the details on both cars but it may take me a few days as a lot of the paper work is still with the DVLA

I'm certain you have one of the eleven (someone once told me that the yellow wheels were optional, but I'm not absolutely sure about that).
The red inserts, steering wheel and paint colour are enough to be sure, unless someones gone to the trouble and expense of trying to replicate one of the eleven.

Sy V - Thanks for the update on the specail edition. The red inserts and the steering wheel all look origional so I doubt someone added them recently, which all seems to indicate that my car may be one of the 11.

What is your Limited Edition number and can you remember the one you wrote off?

As Sy has said I'm sure yours is as well, just by going on the colour and the red interior bits that were an option, like the yellow wheels I think.

Only thing is I'm not sure if there are only 11. This number has been mentioned before but who knows. Well Sy any proof?

Like I said I have 8 recorded but only have 250 cars, so on that ratio we are looking at 26

The whole reason I started the Register was to find out how many of each colour, especially Midnight Blue which I've heard was only 6-12(4 so far). There are one off's like Cranberry Red, Mauritius Blue, Magenta and Bugatti Blue and also a few Pearl whites but who knows.

Mauritius Blue is owned by Ratman, a very similar colour to mine.

I hear what you say about the metallic LRGs but some must be resprays. Eleven is the correct figure.

I remember actually seeing a brand new LRG in the window of RYLAND LOTUS Birmingham back in '95 (I guess). It did have yellow wheels but not the red inserts on the interior.
Are the red inserts factory/part of the original Limited run (non customer spec'd)?
I saw the car with red inserts at Paul Matty. It was very nice if a little ecclectic! But it did get me thinking that maybe the red was added at a later date.
Did anyone ever discover the truth?
