Philip, I think it's worth keeping a note of the none screechers as well, just in case there is some difference between the two groups, but I agree with you that they should be separate - list to follow so that we keep it nice and simple and not bogged down with carp.

The tenuous theory I had last night was that it was on the low pressure side of the turbo (go on then, laugh all you like). When I was looking for an easy way into the oil filter, I pushed the exit pipe off the dustbin; there is not a lot keeping it in place and there is a plastic lip which acts as a seal. Still thinking it sounds like vibrating reed/leaf of grass and with Algirdas' observation that it was front left hand side, it made sense at the time. To alter the resistance of the dustbin, I changed the paper filter for a K&N filter (thanks Algirdas) that I happened to have lying around in the loft and to try to improve the seal, I wrapped some self-amalgamating tape (thanks Algirdas) around the exit pipe and made sure with a cable tie.

There would appear to be no difference - it is still shreeking at ~6k revs.

From where do you think the sound is coming from on your car?

Your test this weekend has inspired me to look at everythng from the air cleaner to the intake hose to the throttle body. I hope I have enough extreme tape.

I'm now leaning toward the seams on the intercooler being the potential culprit, but I am the first to admit that there is very little intelligence behind these guesses on my part.

Driving back from the LOG yesterday confused me. I'm back to suspecting the muffler. Yesterday it appeared to be coming from the rear of the car.

Avonvilla used to have a exhaust from SJ I think, that used to screech at a certain rev limit. You could clearly tell it was the rear back box when you placed your head near the rear drivers wheel and someone else dipped the accelerator to about 5000 rpm, then disappear at 6000rpm. Sure it was the baffles inside the rear box that was knackered.
