Lotus Elan Central

I'm in the process of purchasing a 1990, G-reg, British Racing Green, Elan. I test drove it today and it needs a bit of work, but I'm not sure if it's turbo or non-turbo.

There was a boost gauge in the car and the car had discs all round (vented at front). This strikes me as a turbo. The log book didn't state turbo though.

I'm hoping to work on the car during the winter and have it ready for Le Mans next year.

Any assistance to start me off would be much appriciated.

Hi,
If you lifted the bonnet you will see the unit on the front of the engine with turbo on it!
If it is there but not working properly you probably have a seized dumpvalve.
I have just posted with a cry for help in trying to get mine to work properly!

Emmmmm, think you might mean seized wastegate, as the elan was not fitted with dumpvalve as standard ?

Is that the picture of the BRG u`ve test drove? as the inner wings look white to me or is that just the flash/sun

The turbo is the thing under the heatshield with "turbo" written on it (red outline on pic). It doesn't look like a UK spec 1990 car, because it has an O2 sensor (green outline).

If it has a turbo boost gauge, it's an SE. The n/a version has a clock in that position (the SE has an oblong clock you probably won't have seen, because it's hidden by the steering wheel and the indicator stalk).

Brakes are the same for SE, S2 & n/a versions.

Can't believe that this is a picture of the car you drove, unless it's a LHD, note the brake master cylinder is behind the water header tank.

aren't you guys reading the thread title a bit too much

well, the red rubber cover on the boost gauge transducer says it's not an S2 model too :wink:

perhaps there is an LEC member local to you who can look the car over? Otherwise you can post all the info about the car and pictures and we can be as "helpful" as you want.

that too is a good spot.....
its a pic of a fed car showing where the turbo is......

reading too much into it again....doh......cant see t'wood fert trees :shock:
