A cry for help (thanks in anticipation!)

Postby Woodstock777 » Sun 23.09.2007, 21:26

Hi all, Are there any smart people who can help me with this unusual problem.: In brief I was robbed of all my keys last month, Car and house.
I have the spare ignition key which is useful only when i break into the car!(Which is worryingly easy!)

So i would like to know of any reputable companys please who would provide a lock and barrel change and the rough costs involved and is this the sort of thing i could claim for on fully comprehensive insurance?.

One key fits all, Drivers, passenger door and boot but im told this isnt usually the case.

If anyone in the Essex area would be willing to let me try their key in my lock would also be very helpful but I realise this is a long shot!

Cheers

Paul

Speak to your insurance company, they should be able to advise you where to go. One key fits all is the norm on the S2.

At least in Federal cars the trunk is a standard GM key so I assume that the lock is also very standard.

The S1 should have 3 keys: 1 for the doors/boot, 1 for ignition, 1 for glove box.

I have never had a glove box key, and my door locks have been plated over.

Spare blanks for my boot lock are a US only part. Maybe you could get some parts from a write-off?

You could always get your door locks blanked off (like mine!). You would need to get a remote alarm though.

Ledgend has it that Jim (Muley) is the keeper of the keys.

Not just a rumour either.

Need locks first though. May be better to go for standard UK GM (Vauxhall) ones.

Does anyone know what the locks are off? I will shortly be visiting a Vauxhall recycler.

I've just had said Vauhall recycler look at my car - as expected, he went round it saying things like "That's Carlton, that's Astra, that's Cavalier, that's Nova" at many things!

He confirms the locks are GM and may be hybrids e.g. he thinks it is a Nova barrel and Astra latch on the boot. If he can eyeball a lock mechanism, he would be able to confirm what they. He can also look up GM part numbers 90 XXX XXX and confirm if he has any in stock.

Alternatively, now it is confirmed they are GM, you may be able to source them from Vauxhall dealers.

Let me know if you want me to try.

Geoff

...and of course, you took extensive notes and are preparing to post a comprehensive index on the parts cross-reference list, right?
Thanks for this info, Geoff! (anyone know a good Vauxhall recycler in the US?)

You never know your luck! Most (all?) GM parts have a GM code 90 XXX XXX which I've been collecting if I come across it. The locks will probably have to come from someone who has had to dismantle them and no, I'm NOT taking mine apart - they ain't broke so I'm not fixing them!

Airmail on small parts is quite cheap.
