Buy on condition of the car. There's not much between the SE & S2.

S2 has nicer wheels (16" instead of 15" which also means that these days there's a better selection of tyres for them), galvanised rear wishbones (so rust is less of a problem), and a slightly less prone-to-leak hood. Against that, you have a catalyst and pre-catalyst (at least one of which you'll probably need fitted to pass the MOT) O2 sensor, and various other emissions bits with the potential to go wrong.

There's no performance difference that you'll notice. In any case an Everest chip will sort any performance worries.

Just buy the best you can find, having read in this website about things you should check when buying.

I'm inclined to agree with John and say highly unlikely. I don't think it's overpriced by £2k but it would clearly be worth seeing how much movement they are willing to make in the asking price. I would ask a lot more than that for my 1 owner from new 50,000 mile S2 .

Good luck in your search and my advice would be to go for the best car you can find for whatever you are willing to pay.

I tend to agree with John and Nige. I paid well over the odds for my 35k S2 18 months ago, but I wanted it as near pristine as possible as I intend to be buried in it! Mine is virtually wartertight but Ailwyn has an indoor swimming pool in the passenger's footwell.

One thing in your advantage is that it is not a good time of year to be selling an Elan.

I was at the BS motor show too. Mine was one of the blue Elans, although I was wandering around for most of the day so I doubt we met.

You made a good decision by joining the forum before you buy. I didn't but was lucky, especially as I bought my Elan on a gut feeling. It was cheap and needed some work. Only minor work as it happened (apart from needing an alarm because I cannot lock it by key).

Forum members are more willing to help others than you realise. If you wanted an Elaner to help look at a car, then I doubt you would have trouble finding one. You are more likely to have a queue of us wanting to help. We may wind each other up (in good and bad ways) on here sometimes, but most of us are very approachable in person.

Where are you in Essex? I am in Colchester from time to time. My parents live there, and I was brought up there. So I have just a few friends in the area.

Please call me, also come to view my cars, because although not for sale (yet, anyway), you will see the different ends of the SE spectrum. You would have seen the yellow one at the show, but I doubt you'll ever see one like the red one - a well used daily driver You can easily compare the good and the not so good.
