Just got my new exhaust manifold this morning and thinking of giving it a coat of high tempature paint.

However, does anyone know what, rough, temp i should be looking at?? Halfaruds do 500 deg but wasn`t sure if that was enough.

Also what about the turbo housing? that could look brighter as well

I've painted exhaust manifolds with HT paint in the past (though not on the Elan) and have been disappointed with the results. Looks great at first but flakes off over time, even with proper surface prep. If it's off the car already, I'd consider having the maifold and turbo heatshield ceramic coated. Lustre like polished metal and pretty much indestructible from what I've read. I'll wager listers could point you to someone close to where you live.

I've still got a spare pot of THIS manifold dressing.

I haven't tried it yet - it didnt arrive in time during my rebuild - but i will try it over the winter.

I did use a VHT silver spray from my local motor factors - 600 degC I think - on the manifold and it's been fine.

Let me know if you want that spare pot to try.

Just to make it worthwhile.... many years ago I saw a SAAB book on their turbo development. There was a picture of an engine under test and the exhaust manifold was glowing cherry red. Now that was hot. :shock:

ask Dave M what his EGTs run and you get an idea of the temp in the area -- use a thermal infra-red temp gun (I got a nice one at Donington for a tenner) to see what the real-life temps are after driving . . .

Seen this many times on an engine dyno. Quite common and comes up in a matter of minutes at full chat :shock:
