I had a quick look into this last November but I had some concerns about 'what ifs' when the car was hibernated and hence in the 6 months not insured period.
What if.......
a..someone decides to break into the garage and steal the car (if its driveable ie the wheels are still on it etc)
b...something falls on or against the car and causes some serious damage (ie something falling off a shelf)
c...the car catches fire (ie an electrical short in the wiring system)
In the end, I decided it wasn't worth the risk and kept the insurance cover on it.

If you go to the classic car insurers don't they do something suitable?
Maybe a limited mileage policy - I think these can normally be had for up to 6k miles/year?
Or see if they have any scheme by which you can have a normal policy and switch to a laid-up policy for the months when the car is hibernating.

I insured the NMY through Classicline for £175 agreed valuation and limited to 1500 miles per annum. Then upgraded to the next stage (3000 miles) later in the year for another £38.
At least its insured through the winter whilst tucked up in the garage and covered for the possibilities Paul mentioned

I think you're being a bit harsh - surely even yours is worth more than this!

my insurance is £300 for the year
limited to 6000mls
agreed valuation of £10000
includes recovery
having said all that I dont have a main car as such...just 3 classics so this one is classed as my normal car even though I explained that I walk to the station and get the train to work every day.......

The red one's not
But to clarify:
Premium £175
Agreed Valuation £10,000
Mileage 1500
Adjustment to premium of £38 to increase mileage to 3000 (had done 1501 when got back from Hethel 40th)
Excludes recovery.

Hang on a bit, this is a bit like the Harmony Hairspray advert from a time that many of us will remember "Is she?.....or isn't she?" (I digress!)
Either you're over-insured (and paying more for the policy than you should), or underselling your fine machine
