Datalogger

Postby GeoffSmith » Tue 08.01.2008, 21:00

I've been mulling over the idea of a datalogger. My thoughts are to be able to plug it into the ALDL port and leave it to log ES data along with time/date stamp. Possible options are:

1. Record, say, an rolling hours worth of full data at maximum rate of ~10 per second:
a) record data without need for laptop.
b) record lap times on track.
c) button to freeze the data if you ever get a problem on the road.

2. Record about a years worth of speed/revs data at ~1 per second to check on wife's/garage's abuse etc.

3. Interface to SatNav so you can see where you've been.

There would be a USB lead to allow you to download the logs and to select recording options.

They would be more expensive than the interfaces but cheaper than a laptop! If anyone's got any bright ideas or suggestions, let me know.

Hmm, what's an hour's worth of data ?

bizarro 8192 or 8000 baud, right ?
say 10 bits inc stopbits and stuff -> 800B/s , let's call it 1KB/s.
So I ballpark it at ~3.6MB per hour ?

I've recently been playing with Atmel ATMega128s which are pretty cool, maybe a bit over spec'd for this job, but one of the smaller megas would do the job, they've all got UARTs for talking to the ECU, and we could hook it up with an MMC or SD card relatively easily (via SPI):
http://www.captain.at/electronic-atmega-mmc.php

there may well be some opensource FAT filesystem code kicking around - perhaps you could write elan scan files directly out to the MMC/SD and then be able to yank that card and plug it in to your laptop and read the files directly in to elanscan ?

here's some FAT r/w code with SD/MMC interface:

ftp://ftp.circuitcellar.com/pub/Circuit ... ham176.zip

haven't looked at how easy the port would be yet though.

Yep. PIC + 3MB SPI memory was my fag packet baseline.

Huh? :gray: ?

I'd prefer all my data to be straight.

Could be why I said 3MB instead of 4MB or 32Mb then! :bonk:

Could be interested depending on price ;-)

For some reason trackdays don`t seem to like it when you have a laptop sat on the front seat

sounds like a great idea. Agree with monty, would be good to see some track data.

Nice find Charlie. I haven't had time to do much, but I've been tinkering with FPGAs at work - might consider using one as there appears to be a lot of free support for memory devices, USB and even wireless.

Al,

Since it's been too cold to work on the car/fine tune the rev limit warning unit, I've been thinking about the datalogger again. The PIC selector tool has thrown up a new enhanced mid-range part, the PIC16F1827 which seems to fit the bill and has:
4096 Program words
256 bytes of non-volatile memory
384 bytes of volatile memory
1 UART to talk to the Vinculum USB interface - a POP to interface to >1G USB memory sticks
2 serial (SPI or I²C) for the ALDL interface, a DS1302ZN+ RTC, a couple of 16Mbit flash memories (for buffering ~1hour of data in the absence of memory stick), GPS module (TBC), Bluetooth module (TBC) etc.
Additional I/O for e.g. emergency record/save data button, lap counter etc. etc.
Any thoughts?

To avoid the need to go into the garage to test things out, I've done some reverse engineering and made an inverse ElanScan (Nacsnale??) application with LabView so, with a slightly modified interface, I can play back a previously recorded ElanScan log and re-record it in ElanScan! :-D

A small lcd & a couple of push-to-make/release-to-break switches to toggle through a live parameter display & reset the unit?
Could include: last CEL error code, revs, speed, distance, *cough* mpg *cough* :poke:

Would an ultraportable, say a Toshiba Libretto U100, do the trick?
With a strip of Velcro, it can be put anywhere rock solid, and out of sight.
All the I/O 's you want + decent rugged diskspace + the possibility to watch the data (and do a little surfing etc) everywhere you are.
Or do an automated Elanscan data upload to your home PC by Wifi whenever you park your car in front of your house...

Just a thougt...

Would a handheld device be suitable? Less expensive and easier to store somewhere. Some of them have a lot of processing power these days.

That sounds good, I must admit I've wandered from the OneTruePath(tm) recently, and been tempted by Atmel parts for the last project or two, the ATMega128 in particular, mainly because it doesn't do the tiresome register bank paging that the PICs do, and you can just write in C (gcc toolchain, it's free, or there's the Atmel IDE thing for windows) for all but the most timing critical sections.

4K SRAM
4K EEPROM
128K Flash
16 MIPS
TwoWire serial I/O
2 UARTS
SPI Master (or slave)
53 I/Os
JTAG debugging luxury :)

I used the handy modules developed by this guy in .de: Siphec ATMega modules (mainly 'cos I can't etch finely enough at home to do SMT), they were a bit cheaper when €1 ≠ £1…

BTW, I seem to recall that SD cards speak SPI, so we could avoid the cost of the USB Host controller [some searching later: http://www.avrrepository.com/samplecode ... /main.html ]

Nice one :)
So you've decoded the ElanScan log format then ?

I did knock up a fakeecu thing when I was writing the N770 "port" of elanscan, but it mainly just threw back results of the form A*sin(t*B) for a handful of params, not particularly useful, but made for pretty plots :D

+1 I've been playing with one on the Arduino platfom for about a year now, and love them - this was what I had in mind for a trip log module in the mpg thread, but if it's appropriate or desirable to incorporate that functionality in this project so much the better.
