Twin Bubble soft top lid ( similar to LGM )

Postby abmunro » Wed 02.01.2008, 22:11

I sent this email to Simon at SPC design.

Hello Simon

I don’t know if you would be interested but I would like to have a Twin Bubble hood cover like the ones in the picture on the link I have provided.

http://lotuselancentral.com/forum/viewt ... hlight=lgm

Basically when I'm driving the Elan with the roof down its pretty hard to here the stereo.

I think it would be a good idea to have these twin bubble hood covers made but to make the front of it, the bit directly behind the seats go down to the bulkhead so its not possible to see into the soft top area. Then I would like to fit a 6" OR 8" round speaker into the bubble part. Then the speaker would be directly behind my head.

I could start a thread to gauge possible interest on lotuselancentral.

I have already purchased a spare hood cover and I am just looking for a company to do the work.

Here is Simons response.....

Hi Tony,

This sounds like an interesting idea, and not too difficult to achieve. Maybe it could also be designed to encompass roll hoops for added safety.
I presume that you still want the convertible top to be fully functioning, so we would have to keep this in mind when closing the front area of the cover.

It would be interesting to gauge the interest on LEC as otherwise it would be quite expensive to produce as a one-off.

So would anyone else be interested?

Could any one who may be interested please add there name to the list below. Obviously I don't now any costs yet or even if the project will take off. I know I would definitely like one, I would definitely like to tidy up the gap where the Soft top is.

Thanks

I've wanted one ever since I saw pictures fo LGM's and kjeld's cars. I even asked kjeld about it the first time I saw it, and made the suggestion that the front surface would be an excellent place for speakers. I guess great minds think alike. The only thing for me is that I don't want it to block the opening to the stowage area. Two reasons: 1. I have a subwoofer mounted in there, and 2. I toss soft items in there, like my cap, a light jacket, etc, that I need to be able to easily get to.

When and how much will be major factors for me though. One of my shift cables has started slipping, so I've just sent WillB about $500 for AB cables. I have a rusted lower wishbone, so I'm expecting that I'll be paying out for a pair of SS rear wishbones very soon. Also, just to make my wife feel better about the times she's run into things in the driveway (like me in my Rodeo), I thought it would be a nice thing to do if I were to back my Lotus into a tree :bonk: so now I have the $500 insurance deductible to pay out too. When it rains, it pours.

Lord Tony of Chester-le-Street, :D

Unless my PC is playing games, the above is a dead link and I cannot visualise what you are describing.

I would also like them to integrate a perspex wind deflector between the two Bubbles.

I have no idea of the costs.

I bought a spare hood cover and was just going to do it as a one off.

Will have to discuss it with Simon if there is sufficient interest....

Happy that you guys like the bubbles. Its not quite as simple as you might think, though. I had to modify the two trailing links on the soft top frame so they would clear the bubbles as you raise and lower the top into place. This is also why the domes have a swage style line moulded in them. It was the only way to move the domes to an acceptable location on the toneau + they just go with the look of the car. I'm not near the car at the 'mo so I can't take pics of the mods but you will need to do them if you wish the bubbles to sit behind the seats.

this link should help

This is what I was talking about. If you look at the link, I had to machine a slot into it to allow for the rear link to slide alittle when you raise and lower the top. If you don't do this little mod the top doesn't work. You can also see the swage line and its purpose in the photo (good work Ekapol). I was thinking about just doing the bubbles without the swage but it sits too far to the inside of the car and looks abit funny. It didn't flow with the lines of the car. My goal was to build something that looks like it came from the factory that way. I think it came out pretty well.
