Dials - black background pitted.

Postby RayD » Fri 18.01.2008, 22:04

Two of my dials – boost and oil pressure - appear to have the black paint flaking off the back, giving them a peppered see through effect when the dash lights are on.

Could anyone tell me if it’s a simple matter of repainting the back – or are they put together in such away the red markings would be obliterated in the process?

Were a lot of perfectly good black ones removed when the white Lockwood dials were being fitted?

Thanks
Ray

Ray,

Likewise, I'm in the process of ordering the Metal Monkey dial faces and will have original dial faces surplus to requirements once done. Alternatively I have a set of silver Lockwood faces (never fitted) which I would be willing to sell on. Repainting would not be easy without painting over the markings.

Both Boost and Oil Pressure gauges were in the surplus parts sale from Lotus last year, if still available at the sale price you might want to save the trouble of dismantling the gauges by simply replacing them with new ones see Here look as though they are £12 each.

Here’s an enhanced picture of the worst one – my black paint idea would have been no good as some of the red is pitted.

That's a good point Paul,

I hadn't thought what might have caused it, I just assumed they all went like it eventually.

But now you mention it... when I went to Halfords for the fan switch bulb last week I chose the part No.286 1.2watt and right next to it was an identical size bulb but 2.3watt. I wonder......

Dermot,

That's how mine are, it may have been a bad batch.

Since Paul mentioned the bulb - I've had a look and they all seem to be equal brightness.

I’ve had a glance at the back of the dials in advance of making a start tomorrow…

Having been pre-warned by Paul to be careful with the bulb holders, I feel duty bound not to break one of them.

I thought they might have been the same type as the heater controls which simply pop out from the back – but they seem more secure.

How do they come out?

Do they pop out, or is it a bayonet fitting that needs a quarter turn, or is it something else?

Thanks Ray

They need quarter turn Ray, or at least mine did.
