Postby GeoffSmith » Fri 25.01.2008, 00:32

me hearties. :-D

I've just had an update of Avast's virus database (080124-0) and I'm not allowed access to any pages on LEC and I get a log message:

24/01/2008 23:17:42 SYSTEM 1524 Sign of "VBS:Malware-gen" has been found in "http://lotuselancentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11534&highlight=\unp14022784" file.

Oops, with regular updates being rushed out that can happen from time to time.
CA's InoculateIt took a dislike to Zone Labs' Integrity Client (the corporate-but-not-free version of Zone Alarm) 2 or 3 years ago, and promptly renamed it, disabling the firewall installed on all company laptops! Fortunately, it had 2 engines so I was able to swap over all the company's workstations to the one which did not have a problem with this.
It seemed to fix itself too, I guess CA sorted this with a subsequent signature update.

You have obviously got around this though Geoff. What did you do, use another PC or turn off AV?

It'll be the moderators cutting down your access and consequent postings. At your current rate of >7 per day you're on course to outstrip Doug and knock him off the top spot by Christmas and we can't have that can we ??

Not quite!

Mind you, in a roundabout way, these virus protection programs are getting a bit close to the edge and giving us a long distance runaround. And you and I should upgrade less often so there is less of a perpetual change. I get up, I get down, I'm forever updating it every time, and a word I've read makes me think I've seen all good people do the same. Yours is no disgrace if you don't mind a dose of the clap. :-D

How to get rid of Norton and get Avast Free? On my alternate computer my Norton has ran out. I don't want to pay to renew that. How can I uninstall Norton and install Avast Free?

Remove:
Start -> Control Panel -> Add and remove programs -> anything named Norton or Symantec.

Install:
www.download.com -> search for Avast FREE -> download / install.

register after it finishes it's updates.
Open Avast! User interface and customize your install to your liking.

Rootkit issues are not good. I would follow the suggestions from Avast.

And when you do John, nothing happens ... it seemingly does a full scan ... finds nothing and continues to show the notice occasionally.

Malwarebytes doesn't find anything either.

It's due for a re-format so I may do that this weekend.

I wondered if the notice itself was the “spam” and not coming from Avast?

I may try is to remove and reload Avast.

Thanks Jim.

The problem was solved by removing and re-installing Avast.

As John (Brit-Car-Nut) explained just going into “Maintenance” and updating the engine and virus definitions which should now be on version 111218-1 and the Program which is now 6.0.1367 would have had the same effect.
