To start with - I know nothing about computers.

My laptop wouldn't start up the other day. It came up with the message 'will not start up as the file is corrupt' (or something similar).
Anyhow, after a bit of faffing and guesswork I've somehow managed to start it up, and its working perfectly almost. Its faster than its ever been too
Only problem is the power lead that plugs in the back is red hot Just the very end which is shrouded in plastic. The plastic is a little kinked but only a bit. I've tried squashing it back into shape
The minute I remove the power lead and run it off its battery everything slows right down. Plug it back in and its faster than its ever been.
I've just paid out £140 to have the main computer fixed as it blew!

Just a new lead I need perhaps? (the single pin inside the laptop that the power lead plugs into looks straight) Should I unplug it imediately?

When you run a laptop on battery it does usually drop the performance in order to extend the battery life.

What is a bit worrying is how hot you are describing the plug.... it certainly shouldn't be getting that hot. The transformer box I can understand warming up (but not to the point where it is hot to the touch).

Are you sure it's the correct power adaptor for the laptop?

I would disconnect the power cord asap or excessive heat could damage components within the laptop.

Do you know what you did to get it working? Did you go into the BIOS setup (if you press F1 or DEL or F12 or END - depending on the laptop - at the very first screen you see when you start it up)?

The 'slowing down' on batteries is normally something you can configure from the power icon in the control panel.

The heat sounds worrying. There have been a lot of recalls for laptop power supplies that suddenly decide to melt....

Is the laptop plugged into the correct power supply...

Yep wires in the right place. Even I know that, just

Montys defragged and dewangled it but its still as slow as Parsnips senior on a bad day.
Mrs Dico is going to contact the provider, it may just be a coincidence that it is so slow and not related to the fact it went all weird on me.
The wires cooled down at least. If it gets hot again I'll see about getting a replacement.

if its just the net thats slow
clear your history
clear your cookies
run a virus scan
check that only the programs u need are running
eg having msn messinger or skype running in the back ground slows you down
still no joy
save all the files ect to a disc and reinstall the operating system.
if you dont want to go that far go to controll pannel add remove programs and bin the ones u dont use also empty your trash can

All seems well at the mo. Or at least as good as its ever been
addict I think PaulP bought a new towing eye last year for around a tenner from either Stonleigh or Donington.
