Here's the numbers on the seal which is in my bearing kit

So does that mean my seals are wrong

I'm going to try and confrim the GM number on my parts CD and then go over to the Vauxhall Parts and get a couple. Hopefully they will have them on the shelf and I can compare them side-by-side.

The rear hub oil seal GM number is confirmed as 90217059 (fits a Corsa 1983 - 1993 plus others)

My local Vauxhall place (luckily) didnt have any in stock but they are listed at £9.52 ea!

So I went to my local motor factors and bought a complete rear wheel bearing kit for the Corsa 83 - 93 for £7 ea. Maybe I can sell the bearing kit on minus the seal

I have done some basic comparisons of the GM and VW seals (using a ruler! calipers are in work).

OD - GM 62mm, VW 58mm
ID - GM 39mm, VW 39mm
Flange thickness - GM 1mm, VW 2mm
Ridged section - GM 7mm, VW 6mm

As you can see, they are very similar.

Has anyone fitted the VW seal that comes with the kit?

Unfortunately I wont be able to confirm either way until next month.

just to save any confussion the corsa wasnt made 83-93 that was the nova. these are the cars that use the seal we need.

Astra MK1 MK2 all models 1979-1991

Cavalier MK2 all models 1981-1988 (not estates)
Cavalier MK3 1.4 1988-1993
1.6 1988-1993
1.7D 1.7TD 1988-1993
1.8 1988-1993
2.0 1988-1993 (not 16V models)

bearing kits containing the seal are easy to find and cheap (ie cheaper than just the seal from main dealer). as stated above

Ray, I'm still to do my rear brake upgrade so I havent fitted my new wheel bearings yet.

It is still to be confirmed.

But what I read from various threads is that the VW bearing fits, but it is a GM seal that you need. (if that makes sense?)

However, when I come to do mine, I'll check out the VW seal as well and report back.

To be on the safe side Ray, I'd buy both VW and GM kits before starting the work. If it turns out that the VW seal will fit, you can always return the unused kit for a refund.

The parts are top quality and a perfect fit.

While it says Vauxhall Carlton 1978-1986 on the box, you would get the same thing if you asked for a Corsa 1993-2000

At Halfords

Corsa Kit is HWB 301
Jetta Kit is HWB 303
FRONT wheel bearing kit listed for the Elan is Quinton Hazel QWB 832 £28.83
Edit: Front Wheel Bearing SKF Bearing BAHB 311396B can be found in the Wheel Bearing Kit, Part Number QWB436 according to the Technical People at Quinton Hazel in October 2008

I have bought bearing kit QWB201, which matches the Kit RayD mentions:

Are we all satisfied that the seal "40- 52- 5-7" in this kit works as well as the GM seal?

I see that RayD and Dave Pink have fitted it instead of the GM seal.

The 40-52-5-7 Oil Seal sold for the GM Vauxhall Carlton / Corsa is the correct seal.

Oil Seal numbers also represent the sizes...in this case 40mm ID, 52mm OD, 5mm depth of 52mm diameter, 7mm overall depth, i.e. 2mm thick flange. The overall diameter of the outer flange is not so important. It seems seals have been fitted with the flange ranging from 58mm to 62mm.

If you check the ones that come off you should see a connection between the numbers...my original ones were...40-52/62 8.5/7

New one....40mm – 52mm – 5mm – 7mm (62mm OD but not mentioned)
Old one ....40mm – 52mm – 7mm – 8.5mm (62mm OD)

The difference in 5mm and 7mm comes from them choosing to add the rounded off bit or not.

I have just got back from Halfords where I have bought the GM Kit HWB301, as you say, the seal is almost the same, but has a larger Outside Diameter.

VW Seal - 62mm, flange 2mm
GM Seal - 58mm, flange 1.5mm

BUT the bearings are the same!!!! I am now totally confused as to why the initial suggestion as to buy VW Bearings and a GM seal!

I can only speak for the GM ones, but a number of people have used the ones marked up for VW, including the seal.

I assume it was the difference in the outer diameter of the flange that caused the concern and as it happens it’s the only measurement that isn’t important... within reason.

Remember to try the inner races on the stub shaft to make sure they’re a good fit.

Well if you've got to this post and everything appears clear as mud, hopefully this will help.

Today I went to GSF to purchase two rear wheel bearing kits (I get a small discount)

The two kits I was going to purchase were Pt No QWB201 (various VW's, Audi's etc) The price for each kit was £8.

Whilst at the GSF service counter I was offered an alternate more expensive kit (OEM for the various VW's, Audi's etc), but still the same spec as the QWB201.

The kit I was offered was GSF Pt No 413VG0150

OEM Pt No 41311J

I took them up on this offer... I purchased two kits for £32.32

As noted by others, the seals dimensions are as the Lotus OEM with one exception, the lip is about 1mm smaller.

Please see the following photographs of me fitting the bearings to a Brand new Lotus brake hub.

The second to last photograph show the bearings and seal fitted to the brake hub

The last photograph is just to show what the seal would look like when the brake hub is slid over the axle...a perfect fit.. having the lip 1mm smaller seems to make very little difference

The Specifications are the same, but it was more about the quality of the product, the guarantee, the tolerances, the failure rate...blah blah

Granted I could of spent a couple of quid on some random Chinese bearings on Ebay, or spent a small fortune somewhere else.

Horses for courses and all that.
