Project Challenge/Competition

Postby ailwyn » Mon 18.02.2008, 16:48

The challenge is this:

Try and come up with, and deliver, a project that will benefit the Elan and LEC. Could be a turbo upgrade, complete induction system, updated interior basically anything Elan related. The idea need not be original, but the implementation should be.

The project can be devised and undertaken by individuals or groups, organise it any way you like.

It's no good just coming up with an idea, the project team need to carry this through to a possible group buy, along the way you will need to manage the list of interested parties, judging demand, cost estimation, design, fabrication, and final payment and delivery.

If you pick an ambitious and interesting project I'm sure there will be a lot of buy in from the rest of LEC, nobody needs to work in isolation.

If you are interested then these are the parameters:
1. Final cost should be kept to a max £1K per order
2. Fitting should be acheivable with modest level of mechanical competence
3. The final product should be a full kit - i.e. a bolt on solution, no need to hunt for extra parts
4. Create a Wiki page for the project, so that all discussion stays in the forum and a concise progress/description is maintained on the Wiki.

Any projects that are submitted can be voted upon by members at a later date. The winner or winners will be announced at Donny 2009... talks are currently underway with management to see what can be done as far as prizes or awards. :-D

Please register your interest in this thread and I'll maintain a list of the included projects at the top.

What a splendid idea - nice one Ailwyn.

Not certain about prizes, but we can work on that - trophy?

Supercharger, in place of the turbo, almost certainly break the £1K limit, but it has an appeal :) .

Perhaps a matching pair  .

Seriously though why not? The turbo'd engine is already designed for forced induction and we know what needs to be done if you want to boost consistently over 1 bar or so (3 bar MAP sensor, 550cc injectors and a new and/or remapped ECU). I was just thinking about boost delivery, a supercharger will have the low down boost and lack of lag that a turbo can never have, however if engine driven it will cause some parasitic loss of power. Just wondering how many supercharged Elises are finding their way to the breakers (don't know what boost pressure they produce) and what the possibility of fitting a supercharger is in place of the turbo. Anyway, they make a nice noise.

Copying a lotus part is not really new is it??

On the other could it be classed as an upgrade??

At the current rate the competition won't even get off the ground... but lets hope that with a few local meets due at the beginning of march there will be some entries forthcoming soon.

Providing that you can put a kit together that people can buy, not a problem.

Quick, cheap and simple upgrade..........

Put a box of matches in the glove box - It makes the cigarette lighter portable and you can use it away from the car :smt044

I think there's a bloke in Leeds knocking this upgrade out for abot a tenner!

sorry, I'll behave now

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Sorry to take this slightly off topic, but what was the Fuel filler cap release mechanism?

I thought that was standard ????

Meant to say, "in cabin, electrically operated fuel filler flap release mechanism"!

Gary- I think Paul is referring to releasing the fuel filler cap from a switch/device inside the cabin rather than walking round to the passenger door and releasing the fuel filler flap by yanking on that black handle.

I'm sure Clemo or Dapinky have this ?? Or am I thinking of the remote boot release ??

PS Paul - you forgot the carbon fibre bits by Dodgy Darren, clothing by Monty and Elanman and the original bling nuts, bolts and washers by Stateside Dave. Tsk, tsk :smt018

How about A Post seals,re designed slightly to avoid copy-right which would probably prove to be better.I'm sure they could be produced far cheaper than Lotus are going to charge when [if] they adventurely appear!
Come to think of it why not all the seals
