Okay I still have a knocking noise on the front of the car and I sort of know whereabouts it is,
I was wondering if anyone knew and if they have had this problem before on their Elan.
Ideas !
I think I might be either a CV joint ! an inner not an outer, as there is no noise as I turn round corners or go round bends.
It is not a wheel bearing, it doesn't hum
The noise only happens when you drive slowly about under 5 miles an hour, and it is a rythmic knock or clunk.
Or
On the centre drive assembly you can wiggle the Drive shaft slightly at the bearing end it is not solid sat in there, however you can not buy a new bearing for this, you have to buy the whole new unit (Centre Drive Assembly) which is £315 +VAT !
HELP ! lol any ideas are most welcome !

It will be the wheel bearing.
I had the same problem.
Noise seemed to be coming from everything in the drive train.
Thought about the same middle bearing replacement as you.
Went for the wheel bearing and that cured the problem.
The wheel bearings did not hum on mine either-They just had a rhythmic knock or clumk.
Change the wheel bearings first and then look elsewhere if problem is not cured.

I had exactly the same thing and a wasted a year checking the brake discs for warping and putting in a new half-shaft. It was the wheel bearing, RH side.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
