Presumably achieved by earthing pin 85 of the cooling fan relay?

BTW, do you know what the pressure switch is in the bottom left had corner? Nobody has answered me the first time I asked.

Clemo,
how did you terminate the brown cable at the relay end (pin 85)?

I cant quite make it out from the pictures. It looks as though you've just jammed it into the hole and then pushed the relay back in

I hope you meant to include Specky as well - our life in his hands and all that. But if you know something about his work that I dont, send me an e-mail so I can warn Matt before he gets on the helicopter!!!!!

As long as Specky stays away from the electrics I'm sure it'll be fine

Yep. Don't want tin bashers anywhere near those electrons. :-D (Sorry Specky, I KNEW there was one more!)

I'm thinking bridging pins 30 & 87, via a switch of course  might be better - especially for those track day types.
Pin 85 is via ignition and I never like sitting with ign on and engine not running - days of old when the coil would get hot

You'll need a 30A switch Dave. That's like, 'king big!

Your best bet would probably to fit a dual pole switch and switch 30 to 86 and 85 to ground, so the relay would take the strain. Watch you don't flatten the battery though!

yep.. if you were standing on your head in the footwell trying to get to the underside of a wrist breaking panel of relay/fuses you would have jamed it in as well..

i also looked at other points to break in , such as by the fans or into the top loom but this was by far the easiest..

write up to follow.....

Clemo,
If you remove all the relay units from the board, and undo those two 10mm bolts, you can get to the underside of the fuse-box. No more standing on head in the footwell

Theres a 30A fuse supplying the load side of that relay. Just be careful that the relay is seated back properly. You dont want any dodgy connections causing a hot junction! Thats how some car fires are started.

Clemo, to have your fans working by your by-pass switch, do you need to have the ignition in position 1? (ie the dash tell-tale lights on?)

Dave wants to be able to switch his fans on even if the key isnt in the ignition.

I came across a couple of sheets of paper I printed out years ago when Clemo put his fan-switch instructions on the thread which has now disappeared (along with so many others). These comprise the write-up which corresponds to the pictures posted for Clemo by Geoff at the start of this thread.

I have put them through a scanner, OCR & spellcheck. Any remaining garbling was there in the beginning.

I fitted an in line cooling fan switch yesterday as I am fed up with blanking plates not doing anything. Plus sitting in traffic waiting for the fans to come on. It was very easy.

Under the main dashboard cover lie two banks of relays. The top row of relays has 4 along the top (with aircon) or 3 without. The one on the right of that bank is the fans relay. Pick up leg 85 from that relay and take it to a switch (previously taken from a Vauxhall Carlton) fitted under where your digital clock is, then run a wire back up to the right hand bank of fuses with a large phillips headed screw (its the only obvious one) this is earthed . Hey presto an inline fan

Cooling fan in line switch: description of the pictures shown.

1. The bank of fuses underneath the binnacle cover on dash. This shows "C" which is the 3rd one on the right. As you can see I have a brown piece of wire next to it. (For those with aircon you will have 4 relays along the top.)

2. This picture is a clearer shot. From here you need to take out the relay and locate leg 85. It is clearly marked on the back of the relay. Wrap a wire around this leg so that when you put it back in, it will make a connection. Drop the wire to wherever you are putting the switch.

3. This is the bank of fuses to the left of where we have just been. It has a very clear screw head on it which is EARTHED. From this earth point you will need to attach a piece of wire and drop the other end to your switch point.

4. You should now have 2 wires at your switch point (one from the leg of the relay, and the other from the screw earth point). This picture shows the side of a Vauxhall switch to which I have attached 2 spade connectors and fitted to the back. This makes the full circuit.

5. Shows clearly the back of a switch; the lower 2 pins that 1 am pointing at are the ones I used. (If you can close up on the picture they are the silvery ones rather than the copper colour ones)

6. Obvious !! The spade connectors I used.

The circuit only works with the ignition ON with or without the engine running but NOT with the keys out. DO NOT try and get the back lights to work; it will cause problems with the ECU.

I found this very easy to fit. It is crude in its fitting. I did try every other way of getting into the underside of the relays to pick up a wire but it is impossible to get to it without major dashboard removal.

To all those that give it a go, good luck. I have tried to make the instructions clear and obvious, so sorry if this insults your intelligence !! For any further information drop me an email.

ALL THE BEST
CLEMO
