Lotus Elan Central

Hi,

Just wondered if anybody in the UK who owns an Elan M100 S2 could do me a big favour by taking a look at the part number that is stamped on their oxygen sensor. Not the Lotus part number, the actual reference stamped on to the sensor.

What number is stamped on the sensor please?. I’ve taken a look at mine and no number is present for some reason.

There is a good reason for asking……

My car is presently virtually un-driveable because I need to replace my Oxygen sensor. I have been reading on this forum about guys in the USA that are using NGK or Bosch replacements which can be picked up for substantially less than the prices offered by Lotus dealers. The NGK part number in the USA is 21012 but it seems evident that in the UK that particular part number does not exist.

Every motor factor that I made contact with over the weekend did not list Lotus in relation to NGK or indeed even Bosch.

I subsequently made contact with NGK UK Technical support who are also unable to cross reference the USA part number with an equivalent UK part number. The person on the phone was very helpful though and suggested that if I get hold of the number stamped on the sensor fitted on my car, then he will try again and will most likely be able to help.

Life I say, my sensor has no numbers stamped on mine at all.

Any feedback appreciated and, of course, if I am able to cross reference a sensor available in the UK I will post the info up for others, especially given that the genuine Lotus sensor presently retails at some £175 incl VAT from my local dealer.

Just had a look at mine, and theres no number on it.
Don't be paying that price for it though. I believe some members including Smithy bought some from the states for far less.

Thanks for taking a look at your sensor and posting up. :-)

Strange that they don't have a number - I thought that perhapd the id number on mine might have been on a sticker that could have rubbed off.

When I spoke with NGK UK Technical they advised me that they would almost definately hold a model of sensor that would be a perfect fit requiring no mods at all on fitment, but they need 'that number' off the original sensor first.

Maybe Elan sensors aren't supposed to have numbers on, but I am lead to beleive that they do have in America.

When I took my O2 sensor out, I tried to read the info but it had been graunched by the pipe wrench I had to use to get it out.

I have been looking into whether we can get a low price European replacement, but the connector seems to be common in the US and unheard of in Europe. The closest I got was an original Mini sensor but this is four wire and wrong connector. I believe that the four wire sensor will work (probably better) and have one to play with but I haven't had time to try it.

It would also appear that good (e.g. Bosch) sensors are at least as much (and usually more) in GBP as they are in USD!

When you can buy the correct one from Rockauto for ~$50 plus ~$30 P&P plus whatever the taxman hits you with, I would get online and order one from them. Clemo has just bought some parts and they arrived in about 3 days!

Here's another possible solution. It's slightly more expensive but bear with me:

You could install one of ESM's V5 Switcher Modules with both SE and S2 programs on it, and a CO potentiometer. The Switcher module would cost you at most £200 (or £100 if you already have an ESM chip), and the cost of the CO pot itself, which is not likely to be very much as it's a generic Ford part.

Then you can run in open loop mode for a while (which is slightly less efficient but makes the car perfectly functional) until your O2 sensor turns up. And after that, switch over to closed loop mode.

And hey presto - you have 40BHP more, programmable boost control, and a backup system should you ever have another sensor failure.
