waste gate sticking ?????

Postby whippit » Sun 09.03.2008, 22:38

How free should the waste gate actuator rod feel,
long story short, wife had slight front end bump , pushed bumper back into turbo , car ran massive over boost when i drove home,
i took actuator of turbo in situ, sh-t of a job three small 8 mm bolts, when i moved the gate it felt lumpy, put back together car runs correct boost on gauge but does'nt feel right,
what type of bearing if any does the gate run in, i guess it only moves a few mill when on boost
do i need to strip down the turbo to service the gate

The actuator arm has a peg which goes through a hole in the wastegate arm; there is a circlip on the bottom of the peg.

The wastegate spindle runs in a phosphor bronze bearing and it should run extremely smoothly over 90°. The usual place for seizure is the peg and hole - I freed mine a couple of years ago but it was only when I had the turbo out and had taken it all apart that I really got all the crap out. After lubricating with copaslip, it's now running really smoothly.

looking through the manual it say the rod only moves a few mill to actuate the gate or should it move through a bigger plane,
i tried sucking on the pipe to move the rod but only managed a slight movement befor passing out,
does it move more under higher boost, the car does'nt feel as quick but holds the same boost on the gauge,

Isn't it operated by pressure?, therefore don't suck blow...

Might also try using an airline from a compressor.
