That time of year again. Quote by Norwich Union was £211.05 with maximum no claims protection for life, a bit less than last year but worth checking especially as annual mileage is closer to 4000 miles than 6000 miles. MoneySuperMarket.com ....... cheapest quote £137.35 But hang on, who's that with....... Norwich Union.

Oh well, rang the call centre and spoke to a very helpful gentleman attempting to speak very good English, told him I wanted to reduce the annual mileage and quoted the online price. He was very sorry, but he wouldn't be able to match the online price. But why? Because of the overheads. So, there are £70 more overheads between a computer generated continuation policy and a computer generated new policy: So how does that work? Well the internet doesn't have the same level of overheads. Oh bollocks, it's too hot for a deep philosophical argument; thank you very much, I'll just take it out one line. Would you like me to give you the phone number Sir? What, the one with lower overheads.

If I weren't so cynical, I would say the insurers were more interested in milking regular cash cows.

Geoff! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were a very cynical person I had that same trouble with the Evo's and Impreza's. Quotes would always be lower ont tinternet!!! Than when speaking to the well spoken foreign gentleman on the telephone. I paid £170 for the elan, 3k miles SDP only. But some quotes were ridiculous considering I'm ancient....Not to bothered this year, but will have a good shop around come renewal time........INSURANCE COSTS!!!>>>>>STUPID

I had mine with Peter S taylor 01273 820303 (underwritten by Alianz) £152 3000 miles per year and an agreed value. As I was once told an insurance company is only any good if they pay out when required. It took a while for them to assess the car, but within 3 weeks of the assessment I got paid out.

but a policy with no no-claims would have cost a lot more to start with, and no 'agreed value' to rely on.(and as you know, with prices tumbling into the gutter, do you want to get 'market value' for your car, or a nice figure that you are happy with )

The prices aren't actually too dissimilar, Angies is on a 'normal' policy and cost £141 with full NCB (10+ years), for us both to drive (old gits!) with Advanced driving qualifications, mine came in a few quid more but with 'agreed value' and we both still have cars with full NCB, so i wasn't too interested in building up another 'discount'.

Could anyone tell me what a good price for insurance might be on a 1990 elan, I am going to have to use it as my primary vehicle for a couple of years basing on 10,000 miles per year, also, how do you go about placing a value on your vehicle.

Depends where you live, how old you are, whether the car will be garaged, off street parked, on-street parked in front of your property or on-street parked elsewhere. Mods, etc. will also have an effect.

£165 with an agreed valuation of £6000 and 5k miles a year. Adrian Flux (underwritten by Chaucer) didn't even want to know if I had an alarm/immobiliser

Adrian Flux didn't want to give me a guaranteed valuation quote because (a) the car is less than 20 years old, (b) it is my only car, not a second car.

I gave them the following details and the call stopped prematurely when he asked how much my lowest (non guaranteed valuation) quote was
