Sikaflex

Postby tweetdriver63 » Sat 22.03.2008, 23:09

I've been reading through many write-ups on sealing leaks, and I keep coming to the use of sikaflex. The problem I have is that when I searched for sikaflex, I found there are 15 or so different types. specifically, which type are people using to help make/repair seals around the windscreen etc?

might take it back though as i can get tiger black or something like that from the auto factors in a big caulk style tube for £8

the halfords stuff is £5 for a tiny tube...
and for my car i would need more than a few..

Okay then, now you helpful lot have told Chris (who lives in America) how to follow links to sellers in the UK, will someone please answer his question :D :D

I, also, have often wondered which compound is for which use?

Did Lotus use 1 type throughout, or different stuff for different bits?

Personally, i have a tube of black sillycone RTV sealent which gets used for virtually everything, but it would be nice to know what is the 'proper' stuff to use????

Okay, I was being a bit thick!

so, just to clarify, 221 has been superceded by 291, but it all works the same!

i have just used tiger pu.. ( not tiger poo)

it seems to have less of a shine that sikaflex...

this has always put me off using it before as i think it looks bodgy..

i applied mine with a mastic gun and fettled it with a stanley blade, this helped to get most of the original flappy bits on the outside showing rather than burried in the goo..

however i still fear that it will look shiney...
will have to wait untill its dried..

i guess its better than the wife getting soaked on the way to donny this wekend though..

as for my side , i need to take the door card off and turn the window in a bit more...

so i will have lotus knee this weekend.

Yes Sikaflex 221. I used to order mine from AustinHardware when it was ~$6 then they raised the shipping price by a lot. Then now the quote is ~$18. I will find the other source instead.

It will dry shiny but then you can buff it/grind/or simply rubbing it to make it look flatter. Normally I cut my old credit cards and use them to apply and make it look quite smooth before letting them completely dry then finish with some sanding job.

With most urethane caulking, you can thin the consistancy of it right down to the eqivalent of thin paint with xylene.
Xylene also works for preping the surface for another layer, slicking out and cleanup but it's pretty nasty stuff so only use it outdoors in freeair.

To repair the holes / blemishes in my A-post seals, I simply used a generic black silicone sealant - in my case, a medium sized tube from Poundland(!)

I discovered that it DOES NOT STICK to clingfilm, so I was able to apply it, pop some clingfilm over the top, smooth it with my fingers, shut the door (leaving the cling film in place) and let it cure. Then I opened the door, took the clingfilm off and admired the result.

I was very pleased with the appearance - I hope the new owner of the car is, as well...

Rgds
