Installing A-Post Seals - Help

Postby tweetdriver63 » Fri 18.04.2008, 14:03

OK. I'm excited. I now have two brand new A-post seals just waiting to become part of my Elan.

Anybody, is installation relatively easy?
Should I do this myself? If so, are there any instructions available?
Should I take it to a shop for somebody else to do it? If so, since there's not a Lotus dealer, or specialist, within 200 mile of me, should any decent body man be capable of this job, or should it be done by an auto glass specialist?

Thanks in advance for the help.
Chris

All i can say Chris, is if you aint confident in fitting them, take them to a man who is, cause they cost a lot & ain't readily available if you mess it up !
JPS M100 was built from bare chassis up to create one off M100 in the mould of JPS Team Lotus

Are you going to fit new carriers each side as well?

This will make for easier fitting because of the mess the old ones will be in and the time it would take to get the old ones into a reasonable condition to fit new seals.

Cheaper to buy them than pay a garage to clean the old ones up, unless you do it yourself.

Chris,

I've fitted A post seals and just followed the instructions in the manual, with successful results. Spent a lot of time and effort cleaning up the old carriers but was able to re use these once that was done.

Not long ago, sy got hold of a limited number of them. I was one of the very lucky ones who got a pair. I split the pair up because I really needed the left side (driver's) and figured somebody with a UK car probably needed the right side more than I did (even though my right side seal has a small bad area at the top, and leaks a fair amount). The driver's side tends to be worst because of years of the driver resting his/her arm on the window sill and holding onto the A-post. This tends to degrade the rubber near the top of the seal. After that transaction was complete, Dave S M100, in Atlanta, posted that he had a big assortment of M100 parts to sell. I went to his website (the link is posted here), and noticed a listing for 1 new RH A-Post seal, so I ordered it. Now I have a full set.

That's the whole story. I wish I could say I found a plentiful source, but alas, that mythical source doesn't seem to exist. :(

A post seals

Postby nickb » Mon 21.04.2008, 13:00

When i last had my car serviced at Sinclairs I tried to get them to fit my set , didn't really seam interested and said it would cost me more than the seals cost to be fitted! think the last time they did one they had a real nightmare fitting them and getting the side windows to line up?????

There again they did nick the part no stickers of the packets !mine are a set of Kia ones obtained via our source on Korea.

Cheers

Nick

They are really quite strait forward to fit, if you follow the instructions in the fantastic service manual. 8)
