Code 41 - Cam Angle sensor - repaired by resoldering

Hi,

I hope someone can help please.

My Elan engine management light stays on most of the time, but generally not when cold. I've checked the code in the ECM and it has Code 41, which I understand is the Cam Angle Sensor. I'm sure I've read that these can be more of a common problem on the cars.

Can anyone advise what do I need to replace?

The body of the unit, disc and bearings seem fine, but there is a Hall effect Sensor and an engine speed sensor - is it all of the whole unit or just one of the components? I assume it is something I need to get from a Lotus Dealer.

Your problem will be with the Hall Effect sensor which can be bought for £20 on the Lotus sales list.

You'll need to fill in the correct Lotus Aftersales Form and submit via your Lotus dealer otherwise they may charge you full list price

I've phoned around some Lotus dealers and one has it for £45 + vat, with most at around £100 + vat mark.

What is the Lotus Aftersales Form, I don't think I've seen this?

I assumed I just phoned up and ordered the part then pay for postage for delivery, but it might not be quite so simple?

Any suggestions?

I believe there`s a downloadable form which IIRC you fill in and hand in to your local dealer. I`m sure someone will be along soon to give you a link to the form you require

A100E0102S HALL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Elan Turbo 1989 on £20.00 (reduced from £111.67). Better hurry, they've only got 707 left .

Remember that the prices include VAT, so don't let the dealer add it on again.

Thanks for everyones help on this.

I didn't quite manage to get one for £20, but I'm having one sent from Bell & Colvill at a total price of £26.43 and thought that was OK so went for it.

With the Sensor on its way, I had nothing to lose and I have done the re-solder job on the Sender after exposing the contacts under the rubber. It took a while, but with patience it is not difficult at all, just fiddly. I resoldered the pins and sealed it all up with Silicone.

With it back on the car and taking extra care to get it set correctly, it all works, no engine management light - a really satisfying job at no cost. If anyone need some close up photos of what I did, then let me know.

I'll keep the replacement one as a spare when it arrives.
