Fan dripping water

I am sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find it via the search options.

Whislt I was parked up last night during a heavey rain shower I notied water dripping into the passenger foot well form behind the glove box.

On further inspection the water seemed to be comming out of the bottom of the casing surronding the heater fan.

Does not seem to drip when the car is moving. Cant see any cracks or gaps round the intake bit in the engine bau either

Anyone got any ideas?

Hmmmm. Leaking heater matrix?

Not had it happen on an Elan, though.

Yes, I think it's indicative of a perished vent pipe.
It used to come up regularly but I haven't seen the symptoms reported for a long time and I'm trying to wrack my brains as to the diagnosis.
Is there a pipe there that's made of or lined with foam? - I think that's the one to check first. But please wait for someone else to confirm before going on my word.

If you take off the arch liner you will find a duct running from the front intake (May be part of the top shell?) which is joined with a foam seal - sort of wrapped around and held on with tie wraps?
I think this imay be the one Sy is thinking of? A few folk reported leaks from this area but haven't heard of any for a long time.
Mine crumbled away just by looking at it - replaced with a wrap of old inner tube

Did think about the bit behind the wheel arch liner, but could not work out how this bit would leak when the car was static.

I guess the cars are know for their ability to take in water from strange places. I will pull the liner off later this week when I have a free evening and have a look

Hi Andy

I had the same thing happen to me last winter and when i took the liner off the foam sleave was soaked and had come off at one end. I replaced with a large inner tube and cable ties. Not sure if Lotus still do the foam, but its obviously a known problem as i'm sure its mentioned in the workshop manual under waterproofing. But hey with weather like this who needs to worry!

check the following post it has a picture of the foam pipe.

The problem is that its located directly below the windscreen drain hole so any rain will drip onto it and if its got a hole will leak into the car.
