Stearing Wheel Clearance

Postby jdugene » Fri 16.05.2008, 07:39

Is there a way to get more clearance between the seat and the steering wheel? I heard about lowering the seat by removing spacers. I could use another two inches above the current six inch clearance.
Thanks,
John

6"!
Do you mean from the bottom of the wheel to the top of the horizontal part of the seat?
You can raise the wheel on the UK spec cars, I'm assuming you can do likewise with the SIR Fed-spec wheel...

That's it. From the bottom of the wheel to the horizontal front part of the seat. I have a gentleman interested in buying my car (Red, 39K miles in CA, for sale) but he is a bit overweight and needs more leg clearance. It seems that the mounting bracket shown in the shop manual, would need to be shortened and then the wheel bracket remounted. John

Hi,

Check this out

You need to consider if it is legal to convert your airbag steering wheel to one which is without.

The Fed models do not have an adjustable steering wheel. No tilt, no telescopic. You can easily lower the seat (I did by an inch) by removing the seats and either eliminating the spacers or replacing them with shorter ones. That's what I did (shorter ones that is). I just when to Home Depot with my spacers in hand and found some brass plumbing fittings that did the trick. Keep in mind that not all the spacers are equal height due to the floor being a bit uneven. I suggest you refer to the guides (or apply to get copies here on the site - see links at top) to get the exact spacer measurements.

You could replace the steering wheel with a non-airbag one but finding a hud adapter has been problematic. I am trying to tackle the challenge of fitting the Elise airbag wheel into the Elan and am waiting on parts right now. That may also become an option.

Blimey I didn't realise the Fed cars had them! ;-)
