clear urethane film - Armourfend?

Postby bobbrown » Sat 17.05.2008, 11:19

Has any one tried a paint protection film where the hood meets the stowage cover?
We all know this is a problem area and it even effects Ferrari's so this is not a Lotus only problem
If so any recomendations as to where to buy etc

From a brief crawl around the net there seem to be lots of companies that will fit the product at a price!

... and I've seen photos of Michael's (?) which looked OK. I have armourfend in front of my rear wheel arches where the coke bottle shape flairs out. This area is prone to getting pebble dashed.

Sticks like Sierra Hotel 1 Tango to a blanket.

My Elise is covered in armourfend and it looks fine apart from the fuel filler which has been scuffed and gets dirty around the edges, but then it may be time for a new bit. :-D

I think the Elan I saw with it under the hood loop, looked bad as it stuck out because it didn't cover the whole panel. It was badly worn, but then, that is what will happen there. It didn't look any better than dimpled paint.

Post a pic of your problem paint, maybe the hood is too tight?

I have armourfend all over the front of my Elan, about 11 pieces. If you put it under the hood, I think it will eventually get scuffed making it go frosty, so you cant see the colour underneath properly.

Great stuff though.

Someone once posted on here to wipe/clean the hood seal, which can have road muck stick to it.
I do it now and again. Should do it every time you wash the car really, just a quick wipe.

Jostler has done it on his car - like a big 'C' shape. He has used paintshield (rhino protect) and it looks good TBH. However to be absolutely safe it would be better to get the whole stowage lid covered so that you could see the edges.
Could the 'Hokey-Cokey' actually be what it's all about?

Looking at that diagram I have stone chips in places Armourfend doesn't reach.

This is the kit that is on my car, other than the rear roof panel pieces.

My car I'm told was the Guinea pig, while at Sinclaires.

Hi Nige, fancy sharing those places with us :D :D

I never knew armourfend was just down the road from me, perhaps we could request the kit for M100's are modified...

looking at the prices quoted, plus a couple of hours labour, I intend to have the works once mines resprayed.

Looks like it does half the job to me! I agree with Nige I have stone chips in the usual places and that's not covered by armour fend :smt017

Would be worth it if they covered the whole bumper, Clam and bonnet.

I thought Joss used Venture tape?
It does look good though. You have to be standing right next to the car before it becomes visible. He did it in 2 parts which meet in the centre.

I have had another look at the picture and my kit is alot different from it.

1) I have 2 pieces in front off the rear wheel. The piece they are showing is half the size of mine and I have a piece below it on the seal.

2) The 2 pieces on the bumper wrap around the sides and go into and behind the wheel arch.

3) The lower bumper pieces should be split down the middle to make 2 pieces.

4) The front side wings start in line with the top of the headlights and continue up to the top off the wheel arch in a nice curve.

Are you sure this is the new kit?

I had my hood cover covered with the stuff. The paint on my cover is perfect and I wanted to keep it that way, I had the whole thing done and you can't notice it.

I had most of my Elise done in the same stuff ant it was like new after a year, well worth it!

had mine done after respray at option one , armourfend gives the paint a mottled finish, its a very thin film, my cars not been on the road since it was instaled and iv;e noteced it coming away on the tight radius around the rad intake on the bumper, and on the wing mirrors, i informed hte tec who fitted it and he said he ould put it right ,
armourfend gives a slight orange peel look to the paint, its not cheap eather !!!!!!!!!!!

Here's something similar but in a simple "static cling" film. Neither of these are Elan items but I thought each would cause you to wonder why they aren't.
