Hello all,
I want to remove my handbrake gaiter to replace it. The trouble is, I can't get it off. The black plastic handbrake grip is solidly on the shaft (I've tried quite hard to twist it off) and you can't detatch the lever at the other end. I don't want to cut the old gaiter off (nor the new one to get it on), so how do I get the handle off?
Thanks, Candles.

Candles, you could try using a hairdryer, see if the heat loosens it, must of been lucky, mine came off pretty easily.

Candles,
The old handbrake grip should just pull off. There's no fixing. If Paul's heating fails, and good old brute force and ignorance won't shift it, you can always destroy it and replace it with an aftermarket grip.
The problem I had with changing the gaiter was getting the centre console out. I had to slacken off the handbrake cables (inside the cabin) to allow the handbrake to pull up far enough to allow clearance for the centre console to miss the dashboard.

Thanks for the help Gents, I will set to it with heatgun (set to low!). I'm a fairly old hand at the centre console, and besides, when I was trying to remove the handbrake, it was out anyway. I'm just finalising the last few stages of 'Candles' Fascia Project' so it was all part of the big re-assembly.
Did 125 miles in it last night.....

A gentle heating worked like a charm. Thanks Paul.
I've got the new gaiter on, I just need to select a glue for the handle that'll come somewhere near the original performance!

This is a good excuse to pass on a quick tip regarding Evostic, or any instant contact adhesive for use on cylindrical things...
Coat both items in the normal way and let them stand for the prescribed time...then apply cellulose thinners to one of the items and slide the other on.
