Cleaning the rear screen

Postby TJi » Sun 18.05.2008, 22:29

My rear screen is covered in a layer of dirt but underneath the plastic is clear enough to be usable. You can sort of see in this pic the spot in the upper left that someone's successfully cleaned but the rest of it is opaque.

What can I use to clean it that won't dry out/brittlise the plastic or make the scratching worse? Soft rag and dishsoap?

I'm not an expert, but soft cloth and dishsoap should be fine. I also just recently used some Plastex plastic cleaner/polish on mine to help with the scratches/cloudiness, and it worked pretty well. It's the same stuff I used polishing up my taillight covers.

Yikes! That Hindsight stuff is expensive. Will a 50mL bottle of the Renovo do the whole screen (inside & out)? Or should I get the big bottle?

Wow, that stuff is expensive. Even the Renovo 50ml is about 4 times what the plastex stuff cost me.

This is what you want for daily (as needed) cleaning. It leaves an anti-static film which is also a UV protectant. Use this instead of 'water plus' solutions and your rear window will still look great when the rest of the top is kaput.
It can be found at any marine (boating) supply store.

I found Mothers Plastic Polish very effective on a poor condition rear window http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=272

Beats, yeah.

But what do you recommend for your rear window? ;-)

The hindsight stuff is indeed expensive, however having kindly been lent a hindsight kit and used it on the S2 it is superb and lives up totally to all the claims made for it. Cost aside I don't hesitate to recomend it. Only comment I make is that as you need to polish off the second of the 2 polishes supplied in the kit before it dries, don't try to do the rear screen on a really hot day with the car parked in a sun trap! You can't polish fast enough and it's very warm in the car with the hood up whilst you do the inside!
