20 minutes idling while scanning and....nothing showed up.
The CTS started off at 24c, progressively warming up to 93c, although I still suspect that the intermittent faut lies with this.

The only oddity I noticed was that the Prom id was 9998. I have not seen that one before.

I then dropped my laptop, killing the hard drive. :smt009

was nice meeting yesterday Rip. I think having two Elans in the drive disturbed my neighbours . Do you think it is still the CTS then after the scan.

No idea. I would be guessing. Unfortunate that it did not misbehave while I was scanning it.

About time I got a proper laptop anyway, not a cheap throwaway from work. Talking of which, I have an old one I have dug out. I need to re-install windows and the battery is useless, but I should be able to get it talking to your ECU.

Hi Rushing,

I ran through problems like yours for a longer time and I am still going on.

Here is my experience with this engine problem:

Engine starts fine. When driving a longer distance in one go and engine is able to heat up under load everything is ok.
When heating up the engine during start and stop through the city engine revs up and down while standing at the traffic light. Sometime engine dies.
When engine heated up above average and cools down a little the same happens.
No Check Engine Light came up except two times in two years. This situation I could reproduce in the following situation. Engine is heated up normally. Now you drive down a longer slope in the fifth gear without accelerating (using the engine to keep the car at constant speed). Engine cools down and Check Engine Light comes up. Diagnosis says “34 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (Low voltage / High vacuum)”.
I also smell fuel although I can be sure it is not the tank since that has been replaced a year ago.

Could you confirm that your problems are similar. If yes I am quite sure that it is the MAP sensor, since a problem with this sensor produces problems without the Check Engine Light indication. I get mine exchanged within the next two weeks. I hope I can give you a positive answer then.

Stefan

Absulutly spot on . that is the problem i have stephen. word to word . you sure you have not got my car ??

these are the exact sypmtoms i have . please tell me when you get the map sensor fitted if you have resolved the problem. I got an elan scan done from a helpful member on here as i thoiugh it was the CTS . but the scan said the coolant temperature sensor was ok.

i have no engine light comimg up but have a strong smell of petrol. nothing wrong with the head gasket or petrol tank

PLEASE SEE MY FIRST THREAD ON THE PROBLEM UNDER THIS SUBJECT AND PLEASE READ ON . you will find all the symptoms you have described .

i hope a mapping sensor is not expensive . dont know how much it is here in the uk??

im glad im not the only one with this problem. but i do sympathise with your problem TOO as i am struggling to find out the corect diagnostic for this.

please keep in contact and let me know how you get on . i will email you again near the time .

I had this when the clutch cable was rubbing on the map sensor connections. I moved the map sensor wires around a bit with the car running and this showed up the problem.

Most likely you've got an intermittent connection to the MAP sensor (sensor on the way out, bad connection, damaged wire, knocked by clutch cable, tarnished pins etc. etc.) so the reading the ECU has been getting has been low and has caused your problems. Finally, it has become so bad that the ECU has recognised that the reading is out of limits and has flagged an error.

It seems pretty certain that the MAP signal has been causing your problems. I'd check the connections first for any obvious signs but any of the MAPs listed should be OK.

Hi Jason,

Ok, so after driving the car for 800 Miles (after the replacement of the MAP sensor) I am 99.9% sure that the MAP sensor generated the problem I described above. If you experience the same problems the MAP sensor is a very good guess.

Best regards,
